I think you're doing something right with the values and colors because I found the thumbnail of your painting compelling for those reasons. Personally I'd like to see more highlights, perhaps drawing the eye to the figure's head more. Right now the knife is the hot spot. Your anatomy has issues, and the balance of the figure is awkward. Compositionally I think your character's placement in the frame is a bit uninteresting.
