Yea yea!!! Keep hitting up those andrew loomis books! They will help greatly! Also, Scott Robertson Dvds is one of the best ways to go about training for rendering surfaces and perspective. I would get ahold of those asapThanks for stopping by my sketchbook and remember that no matter what, just draw draw draw. Sometimes just drawing will give you all the answers to things more so than other stuff

@Joe777K7: Thanks! I'll definitely look him up. Would be nice to be able to switch between anatomy and perspective to keep things interesting ^^
Hey SpectreX, hope you don't mind me commenting. I saw your thread about mentoring and came for a nosey at your SB.
It's great to see someone starting with such enthusiasm for drawing. Don't ever lose that sense of fun and enjoyment - it'll see you through those inevitable tough times where everything seems to go wrong. Good luck and keep drawing! You're off to a good start.
@Candra H: Don't mind at all! Thank you for the kind words, I'll keep doing my best, and to keep it fun I switch between studies and drawings I like to do as studies can become tedious:p
@Joe777k7: So I searched Scott Robertson and found his classesBought a few of his online downloads and got started right away. I hope the scans are a bit clear. Tried to clean them up, not my best work :p
So I started with practicing to draw a straight line freestyle (one of the harderst exercise for all beginners I think). And I'm not always pulling it off, but I did notice that my wrist tends to bend a little towards the end. So that's already one thing I can work on.
There is also this huge difference between technical freestyle and organic. With organic it doesn't matter if a line is not completely straight, nothing is straight in nature. But in technical it usually is.
Now I know this is logical and I expected it, but not that the transition would be this though. Got to keep practicing those straights
1 Point Perspective practice
2 Point Perspective
3 Point Perspective
So for the moment I plan to keep switching between Andrew Loomis his books and the DVD courses of Scott Robertson. This way I get different exercises on two different topics. This will keep the studies less tedious. Though I really enjoy watching Scott his DVD's.
Any more tips are always welcome!![]()
Don't neglect drawing from life. Preferably still lives for a start, you can switch to live people when you are confident with staplers and chairs.
@Qitsune: Ah yes, almost forgot about those. Thank you for the tip!
Hey Kenneth, cool to see some other belgian people starting out
Just like Qitsune said, draw from life.
You'll learn most when you focus on stuff in the real world, use those books to sharpen up the details and grow your understanding.
Take a sketchbook with you everywhere you go, draw on the train, the bus, the bar,.. anywhere!
It'll also help you get chicks once you get better at life drawing![]()
I´d also recommend to draw from life! and If you believe It´s boring then I would recommend to read vilppu´s manual for drawing the figure.. half of the book talks about feeling the form while you are drawing... meaning that you should always understand what you are doing.. It was something very useful for me.. maybe It will work for you.. give it a try!![]()
Woooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great im glad you did!!!!!!!! They will help you advance so much!!! Aslo look up the 30 mintue video on Peter Han on youtube. It about Dynamic sketchning and he goes over warm ups for getting better line quality in everythng you draw. They are amazing warm ups which i try to practice everydayIll try to find the link

@Grafguy: Haha already have a wife and kid so I don't need to seduce the ladies :p
@Grafguy & Sobeca: Will do some more drawing from life
@Sobeca: Ah yes VilppuNext on the list after Loomis
@Joe777k7: Thanks for the video man! Had some trouble drawing with my daughter being sick, but I'm definitely not giving up ^^
Hey Spectrex, you are off to a good start. Perspective is really the most important thing to understand as a beginner, so keep learning !!!![]()
@Delmar: Thanks! I'm doing my best
And with that, here are more studies
I ussually warm up with practicing straight lines, elipses and cirkels. I included 2 of these as well. Not all pages got fully scanned (paper was larger than the scanner could handle).

Hey, nice to see such beginning, hope you won't stop! Simply draw a lot no matter what and you'll improve in no time, I'm sure.
What made you want to start drawing?(Just curious)
Good start man. I think you might want to try doing more still lives though.
@Moonrise: ThanksWhen I was younger I drew a lot to get my creativity out of my head (I had a lot of creativity, not so much anymore. Too much numbing tv and internet I think). Now I started drawing again for a few reasons. First of all to relax as drawing is something that, even though I'm focused, relaxes me. I also draw because I like to create, which I can do in my job as well (software engineer). And just the thought of being able to one day create beautiful drawings and paintings is inspiring. Even if it is just for me and nobody else.
@Mewball: Thanks! Yes, I knowEven though I need to and I know I need to, I tend to postpone it as I'm afraid of the result. I need to get that fear out of my system. I know that if it's bad I'll learn from but something holds me back.
I did do one though of a building across the street (perspective practice). Will upload this one and some more studies and practices this evening when I get home from work.
I'm also working on designing my own tattoo, but I'm not gonna upload it (except maybe a pic of my arm when the tat is done) as I would like to keep the tat uniquePeople tend to search the internet for tattoo's :p
Time for an update. There are some drawings from life as well.
The house btw is across the street, but the side facing me is only bricks (hence the missing windows).
Also the eagle.... I know it's bad :p but better to post everything. Ain't no shame to fail, it's how we learn

Your sketchbook is pretty inspiring SpectreX. You reminded me that I should do warm up practices like you are doing. I tend to skip the important basics so its refreshing to come here and see the foundation work you are doing.
Keep it up man, you're doing great!
@Dreln: Thx for the kind words! I do tend to warm up with really simple exercises as it loosens the wrist + I get the advantage of practicing my lines :p
Warming up, followed by 2 pages of vilppu gesture practice.
It's more difficult to find the flow than I thought, I keep going back to contour instead of flow.

A long awaited update. I feel bad about it. Need to seriously get in gear and start studies from my loomis books as this is just plain wrong
This last one was for fun as I was feeling down after those last two

rightly said at the beginning, draw, draw, draw, this is important. Regards

@lunasz: yup
New update, more studies from Loomis 'Fun with a pencil'. Tips/critiques always welcome!

It's good to see that you really do so much studies and "boring" stuff to get your fundamentals right, but many skip this step and get lost.
I'm already seeing improvement in your drawings! Keep it up!
Cheers
See my latest Sketchbook work!

So this is for a challenge, the topic was shipwreck.
I definitely need more practice on my perspective, and detail work.
Bit ashamed of it, but might as well throw it out there to look back later and have a little laugh + satisfaction of how much I progressed at that point.

Some updates, didn't get to draw much.
They are some loomis studies and some from imagination.
Sometimes I'm not even sure about it anymore as I have so little time lately.
But I have to push on, baby steps I guess.
