    Evolution: Great Gray Owl

This is an idea that I've had for quite a while now. My art mainly has focused on traditional wildlife. Apart from art, i have also have a huge interest in science and science fiction. This pencil drawing will be part of a series that I'll be calling "Evolution". The whole idea behind it will be to explore the concept of "what if". In this case, what if Great Gray Owl evolved with only one eye . Before you bring up the question "how can a predator survive without depth perception?", let me explain. The idea is that this bird would evolve on a different reality, not ours. Having one eye would work for whatever reason in that reality. Evolution is clever and behind its design is a perfect reason. It could be be that the bird evolved with one large external eye but would have two internal retinas that would give it stereoscopic vision. Anyway, this is the first in the series . This pencil drawing measures 11"x14".

Love it. Really can't go wrong with a Cycloptic Owl. Nice work on the details.

Suppose it did evolve in an alternate reality where having one eye would be to its advantage, wouldn't the skull evolve a different shape accordingly? Just something to think about.

this might have been cool had you not explained it, just on the basis of being bizarre and very nicely rendered. the eye is obviously rotely copied from one side of a two eyed owl, as it's not even on both sides.

are you that guy who drew marilyn and went to meet that guy?

it's got the same "I am so amazingly detail oriented I miss the big picture" sort of feel. I reccomend big sloppy gestural studies, 30 seconds each to teach your brain a lesson.

It is a cool rendering, but I am not buying the evolution aspect of it. It looks more like an owl from Chernobyl, since as Hamsta said, the other features of the owl would be different as well. What kind of reality is exactly the same except for when it comes to the amount of eyes required? You haven't sold the idea I think, but when I tread it as an owl from Chernobyl, I love it.

Yeah, i think coming up with an elaborate and potentially interesting story about evolution in another universe, and then just chucking it out and saying "Having one eye would work for whatever reason in that reality" is a bit of a time waste.
might as well just say Owls with one are cool because they look cool. Which is just as valid really.

why not have the other eye round the other side of its head, so it can see 360 degrees around, or something?
