Spartan Camp #253 - 50 gestures + Optional "Light and Shadows Study"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 3rd of February.

- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Light and Shadows Study", in any medium.

The Background
A few days ago someone pointed out to me that I had not used any occlusion shadows in a certain painting. I had no idea what they were and had to look it up. This made me realize that I could use some fundamental art studies, and figured this may apply to others as well. Can't go wrong with practising fundamentals!
Here's some of my limited knowledge. We see objects because off its surface, light is reflected into our eyes. When the shape of the object is irregular, it reflects light in varying degrees. The areas that catch a lot of light may also reflect it, while areas that covered or turned away from the light source remain dark. This interplay between the light and the surfaces of an object creates a number of distinct areas that can be studied. It is useful to study these because this allows you to understand and draw forms how we see them.

The Exercise
This optional study is pretty straightforward and a very fundamental exercise. Draw an object that receives light from a single source. Determine the areas that receive light in different degrees and add names. The most basic approach would be to draw or paint a ball from imagination. If you have a suitable object, you can also use that. The terminology is generally quite basic, you can check the reference below!

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

I was going to post in the old one, but seeing there's a new one up. Might as well post my work here
I'll have to do my best to complete the optional assignment this week!

Had some fun with traditional media (gouache, pastel en colorpencil) + imaginary pose taken to completion:

I'm starting to get happy with the 30 secs, but the 90 seconds were awfull. It's always a fun challenge to adapt to different speeds.
Also did a drawing from imagination, which has a lot of mistakes, but I like a lot of things aswell...and a quick cartoony pose

gestures,30 seconds each, a couple of the pencil ones were a minute, i like doing them much better with a thick pencil, easier than pen for me. went a little over 50.

-first ones are pencil,later ones are pen.
-added some figure studies that that were a bit longer along with the gestures.

I had to play with the gimp's Histogram and levels to show the drawings better. Among other things, tones and render are really hard for me to do.

Used http://lovecastle.org/draw/ , for all of the gestures , first i did some 30-60 second stick figures to learn more about structure and weight , where the ribcage is in the pose etc. than some 5 minutes poses after that some harpies from mind and again some stick figures , still have some problems with connecting each body part right ,want it more fluid and accurate :<

First half-ish of the gestures are from posemaniacs and the other half from lovecastle. Some studies from Loomis' Head and Hands, too. Did one quick light and shadow study but I think I'll do more later.

I drew poses at work and home, towards the end there is a few from TV, I tried to keep them fast and loose and copy the pose as efficiently as I could.



With the Light test I have to give thanks to Lakai, Cerasela, and last but not least Nerferinn for putting up with my constant request for crits.

emmm, ignore the small arrows indicating the main ceiling light....their direction is off, now that I look at it. But the actual lighting is good, i checked that.

Great to see you tackle this, I think it's a great exercice!
Some really successful ones like number 14 on sheet 2: I love that you drew the arm from the back as one line. That well spotted.
Also love drawings like 25 on page 2 where the upper leg line goes right into the butt line, it gives so much information with so little lines!

More Loomis heads (learning planes), and some gestures. The bottom ones are my usual sketchy brush in Photoshop, the top ones are hard ink lines in SAI. I still tend to draw very sketchy with those, so I'm not sure what I like better. Doesn't force me to be more bold with my lines apparently, as I had hoped. Still all 60 seconds, btw.
