CHOW #315 :: The Royal Family

finally decide to join one of concept arts contest.. Chow inspired me a lot so i decided to draw the king of hearts. The concept here is that of a cruel tyrant who just can't stay dead. His lifestyle of excesses has weakened his heart terribly, so he goes hunting in his kingdom for fresh hearts to graft into his chest in place of the one he wrecks with his hedonism.

Update: I think its coming along. I decided to modify my original idea from the Jack of Diamonds to more Jack of Spades. I feel like it fits a rogue/thief type guy more. I twisted the wrist a little bit more to make the pose seem less stiff, I reduced the size of his hood and made his head a little bigger. I will prolly look up some reference for armor, belts, and pants. And see what other little nick nacks I can give him.

Nice progress, everyone! Here are my thumbnails for the Queen of Hearts, inspired by Tang dynasty costume design. Most of the time, I associate queens with an aloof and perhaps arrogant, cold attitude, and here I'd like to explore the other emotions that are quite human: sadness, disappointment, and a change of heart, as kingdoms rise and fall.

I think I'm nearly done here? Erased the table and crown because I thought I wouldn't have time, but I guess I was wrong about that. I think it looks better without them anyway.

Read up on some cards. Read that they were inspired by 16/17th century European fashion, and that the French decks reference real people. Queen of Spades is thought to be Athena, so throw all that in for inspiration and bam! A few silhouettes and doodles later, and this is the basic design I've come up with.

Well the first things I have to point out is that her arm holding the flower is way too long. The elbow is supposed to go to just below or at the very last rib. Also, if that is the belly button, that is much too high, we shouldn't even see it based on the clothing.

Now with that aside, since you based your design on the actual card, you have really limited your ideas. Granted it's not exactly the same, but it's much to close to the card. You should try to incorporate your own ideas, set aside the playing card, because remember in the brief, the cards are symbolic of actual people, meaning that isn't exactly what they look like. This is why I didn't limit the race to human, but to a races we are all familiar with.

I recommend playing with more designs of your own. Show us how she is the queen of diamonds through your own interpretation.

@ delightful_piffle- im not really 100% on what you mean by painterly, but Havok got it spot on, i work with a rough design then just bulk it out with colour, shading and light, trying to avoid outlines. In relation to tutorials, im not too sure of any that are about the style, so the only thing i could say are the ones that i watch, they are Feng Zhu on youtube, and darrken on enliighten.com sometimes the crimson daggers stuff when its on

Been at work today so not got too much progress, been struggling with what to do with his right, any one got any suggestions?

Hi everyone! Good ideas over here I'm gonna try to do something and I decided to go with a prom king of diamonds. I'll try to do a clean cartoony style, a bit "disneyish" beacause I wanted to try it and it is something I'm somewhat uncomfortable with. Here's what I'm going with for now. Hopefully I'll get time toi finish it!

Seeing as how this was my first CHOW, I did better than I thought I would. And I hope to participate in more. It seems like its a great confidence booster. Plus it'll give me a chance to maybe talk with other artists! I am looking forward to seeing what other designs come out of this weeks assignment. I hope in the coming weeks I will continue to not lurk on these forums as much :U

Thank you Nizzy G! The Feng Zhu videos on youtube and enlighten.com were very helpful! I'm trained in traditional animation so I needed a little guidance in this area, the Feng Zhu videos are just what I needed.

Need to figure out the "chair" in the diamond, could make him leaning and forget a chair, but I like how pronounced the diamond shape is, and fix the arms and figure out what the head will be now lol. Along with the coat.... and everything really lol.

Basically wiped clean and started over. But headed a better way.

Here's my wip for the queen of hearts. Despite a queen's immense wealth and power, betrayal and deception still surround her. She holds a treacherous heart and asks why, with sadness and disappointment.
