    Prakashkc sketchbook

Hey CA! I've finally gathered the courage to start a SB thread here. I don't believe in New Year resolutions but I believe in goals. And this year my goal is to take drawing and painting more serious. I've decided that I want to reach a level where I can work with it. I know I have a long hard road to go. Maybe I'm too late. I don't know. What I do know is that if I don't ever try, I will never know!

Please help me get better by giving me critique and pointers!

    Much love // Prakash

Not too long ago I started "Project 1001" which is drawing / painting a self portrait everyday until you reach 1001 self portraits. The project is inspired by Andrew Jones 1000 self portraits. So here's some of them. They can all be seen over at http://prakashkc.tumblr.com/archive

Today I ordered George Bridgman's Complete Guide to drawing from life. But it won't arrive until sometime in the middle of next week. But I'm so excited to study under his technique!
    See you tomorrow!

Azsha: Thank you so much for your encouragement! Made me really happy! I will work harder from now on.

#136. My girlfriend got pissed because I wanted to paint my self portrait after getting home from work (I intern as a developer) after midnight. She: "Draw it in 5 minutes." Me: "Challenge accepted" (read Close enough )

Been so much to do at the office. Working as a developer, you never really get any rest.
    So here's self portraits #139-#142.
    Crits are very welcome!

I'm dedicating this year to only studies. So first out I'll go through Bridgman's Complete guide to drawing from life. Will get my ass off to some gesture drawing classes as well.

    Some studies.

    Your gestures are really good!
Good sense of proportion and movement.
Unfortunately your values and colours are not as good.
You don't really wrap the light around the forms which flattens the picture.
Colourwise you should avoid using pure black and be more aware of saturation.
When constructing the head keep in mind that you still have to apply perspective.
Don't make the proportion guidelines parallel because it usually looks really stiff.
    Hope that helps!

Thank you so much for the critique!! Other people have told me about them looking stiff, but I've never understood how to get better with that.
But now it feels much clearer. I should really go and do more Loomis studies!

Any advice on exercises what I could do to get better on values and light?
I'm aware of that stuff I paint always look flat!

I appreciate it so much that you take time to give me crits!

Well, I think you should start your paintings
in bw, that way you don't have worry about colours.
Look at the 5th head from January 25th. The form on that head
is a lot better. You tend to divide the face into light and shadow too much.
Start out with less extreme contrast and divide the object you're painting into plane.
This may sound simple but the planes that turn away from the light are the darkest
the planes that turn towards are the lightest. Interpolate between light and dark in the planes
that are inbetween. Introduce a secondary light to bring out the form more.
And ditch the selfportrait thing for a while. The beard distracts from form and
you should have a big library of different features, not just your own.
And like I said, be aware of perspective and try out different angles.

Thanks Xelar for the honesty and critique! I've actually taken your advice and stopped the self portraits for a while. Feels great. I have like super much energy to spend on my studies now instead . I've only reached page 35 in my Bridgman book but I still feel like I've gotten so many "A-HA"-moments. Awesome book! Right now I'll focus on finishing Bridgman. And when I'm done with the book I'm heading for Loomis. Is that a good or a bad idea?

Moar studies! Unfortunately I haven't been able to draw as much this week as I wanted to, because I was part of a badly planned project and I had to take care of it all in the end == me getting so stressed out.

Been so sick I haven't been able to draw for a week. Sucks! But now I feel better and I have so much cravings for just drawing and studying! On Monday I will attend my first live gesture drawing lesson. So excited! Alright CA. See you around!

These are studies I did before I got sick and 6 pages I did since yesterday (not in chronological order for some reason..). I've finally reached the chapter on the human head in the book. So excited about it!!! Gotten some more a-ha moments. Alright enough talk. I'll jump back to drawing immediately.
