Here's the outline and original colour thumb of a big garden I'm illustrating.

Any crits appreciated! I wanted to keep with the original lighting from the colour thumb, but I felt all the darkness was making the scene appear too much like a forest and not a garden(?), so I went and made the background more open. Not sure if it's the right move or not though.

Your new sketch looks more like a hill in the woods/country side than a garden. Usually gardens are flat and sectioned. How did you envision this? Do you have anymore sketches?

I agree with Kya, it's a bit too "natural" to look like a garden. Needs some neater, more organized landscaping to get the idea across. Straighter, pruned trees, flowers organized in groups, obviously man-made arrangements of rocks and ponds, paths for walking through, things like that.

The colour thumbnail looks like it was a study from my girlfriend's back garden (not kidding, it's pretty much identical, swing and all) .

I do agree with the others, if you're going for 'garden', it probably needs some man-made/planned elements. Does feel like somewhere out in a forest currently.

It's slanting down and to the bottom right corner, where our eye flies off the page. Add some plants or rocks on the left and consider a canvas extension right.
