    Help my Mech

This is my first real " mech design ". So I'm guessing it wont be that impressive.

This is only an hour and a half in... And I'm looking for any sort of critique. I just want to improve!

I've always struggled with getting realistic metal texture/glare.

    How does the pose look?

    does the image read well?

At first glance - the design looks quite believable The textures, the technicals, everything is fine...

Except for the pose - the upper body and head are alright - but they don't quite work with the lower legs. The Mech's front left leg especially. To me, it's the positioning/angle of the foot - It just looks a bit unbalanced. Of course, it could happen "naturally" - but for the intent of an imposing mech painting, it doesn't send that message.

Other than that, just simply more refinement, and more contrast in the darks. But that's standard MO for all pieces .

It definitely reads like a mech so far though I think it could do with more hard edges, also the pose is very human, like a john wayne-type gait, would help make it look more mechanical if it's movement was a bit straighter.

i agree i think its working well, the metal is reading as metal, nice stride and foot dynamic, and i liked the way you depthed it using the distance-lightening, as if its smoky. nice 3d effect.
maybe give him a big fuckoff cannon?

id say its greenlit, keep working it and rendering the parts.

    thx all

    taking all criticism into consideration.

@kendall, I tried to stay away from any sort of gun/weapon as that makes the design too easy. Seems to be a common theme to have the biggest and most badass weapon, but I feel as though if I can get a design down that doesnt have a weapon and is still strong, that I succeeded.

It's a strong start, and as you render it out keep making it crisper and keep building up the planes and solid forms and it will be a great looking mech.

Great job, really inspiring. The only thing that I can think off eventually adding to the picture was adding some subtle environment that indicates size. But not necessarily needed.

Really impressive progression! One thing that bugs me though is the upper part (the "thigh") of the front leg. Because its so dark (and by contrast the bottom part of the leg is light) it gives this weird effect like the leg is bent backwards instead of forwards (like a human leg). Not sure if that was intended but I suspect not given the striding pose you have. How about you throw a little of that sexy metal texture on his thigh to bring it more into the foreground? I think it will help the overall readability of the pose. Great stuff!

i think the lights on his head and shoulders are difficult to read, they could be highlights or actual incandescent headlights.
