Hey guys, starting a sketchbook here for the third time or so. THIS IS THE ONE, THIRD TIME IS THE CHARM! I'd love to hear what you guys think, so please give me your C&C.

Here's a SP I did to start it off, about 3 hours I think.

Figuring out the lighting and comp for my skeleton guy. I just watched The Thing so I was inspired to do an arctic night type lighting theme...

might want to consider pushing the atmosphere and environment aspects of the image. like how the black of night in the arctic is super black, with snowy bits catching the light in the air. you could use that to make the figure pppp baby POP!

A quick doodle before bed... I suck at drawing figures from my imagination, it always takes so much hacking and bashing away at it. I really want to get faster at it.

I'll update the skeleton guy tomorrow, this fencer, and do an environment study, at LEAST. Goals=set!

Koh: Yeah haha, I almost gave him glowing red eyes but opted for red rim lighting instead. Still very terminator-esque though, you're right.

PHATandy: Thanks man, so far this has been the most productive one yet lol

Here's a study of an egyptian deathmask I took a picture of at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and an update of my skeleton robot guy, I still really gotta figure out his hands

. Also here was an alternative lighting option that I was experimenting with earlier. I'm not sure which direction to take this, in some ways the alternative light source is simpler and maybe therefore better. It looks snowier than the red/blue one but I haven't really gotten into painting the snow in yet on that one. Hmmm...

Let me know what you think.

Great start to your SB. You did a good job on your SP and study, the Egyptian deathmask could use some harder edges though. I think the the red/blue skeleton looks better because of the complimentary colors, but that's just me. I hope you keep at it with this SB!

It's a tough choice there mate, BOTH those comps look promising. I still think you should consider finishing up the blue and red design, just for it's fun factor, even though the second comp is slightly more appealing right now

the egyptian mask looks great. Both of those comps are cool though my preference leans towards the one that looks like its in snow. It seems as though your two comps just have different atmospheres and mood more than anything.

Something about the red lighting on the skeleton dude makes the detail pop. So I prefer that one. D: Great start btw. Hope the third time works out for you. I have the same tendency, to procrastinate and drop projects, then pick them back up...so I know what it's like.

@Rustveld: Yeah, you're definitely right, it could use some harder edges. I'm going to try to bring that into my new studies. I soooort of did it with the photo study I did today, but I have to push it further definitely. Thanks for the crit!
@Saarmander: I think I will go ahead with the red/blue comp tomorrow, and push the atmosphere more. If it completely fails I'll go back to the lighter blue one!
@bobmeatbag: Thanks! Yeah, when it comes down to it, it's kind of an arbitrary decision. I have soft spots for both because they both tell kind of different stories, but I think the red/blue one is the one I'm going to move ahead with.
@akkibox: Thanks. Yes, procrastination is definitely a huge flaw of mine also, which I'm trying to CRUSH with this sketchbook. So far so good! ... or at least it's going better than last time

Random demoness sketch for fun. I also did a bunch of figure sketches but I don't have a scanner so I can't show you, tee hee!

Oh well, until next time! I promise to update my skelebot tomorrow too :|.
Oh, ALSO, new thing: I'm gonna post 1 orc per day, as part of a personal project, along side my other studies and what not. Why? CUZ ORCS RULE!

Hey Boge', aside from the stuff you and Niffler were discussing about the drawings aspects of that photo study, I think maybe the colours got a little muddy too? I haven't seen the photo so I can't really say but that hand looks a little... brown? It might be more digestible to do small studies of portions of a photo, like a hand, face, upper body, lower body, instead of the whole thing at once. Might be able to push a smaller study all the way? I dunno, I'll have more to say after I've done more myself! Way to CRUSH it though, super motivating!

Morning warmup, shitty orc sketch.

I was trying to paint using Feng Zhu's brush settings. It's hard and doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me at the moment, but the stuff that he manages to do with it is effin' crazy. I might try doing an environment using the same method and see how that turns out.

Thanks, Saar. Yeah I totally have a bunch of orcs cleaning my apartment as we speak (all they wanted was to go through my trash after, what a steal!).

Here's a small update on mr. skeleton and a quick still life. I am le tired! Gonna hit the hay and get an early start tomorrow. Gotta keep Crushin'!

PS. let me know what you think of mr. skeleton + atmosphere. In my head I am picturing a crazy blizzard from which he's emerging. It's a hard effect to pull off, I'll keep working at it!

I actually think the snow gets a little too distracting. Try lightening up the snow around the focal point? Another suggestion would be to make the snow more dynamic, so maybe blur it into one direction instead of having it fall so randomly.

Very nice start to this sketchbook! (even if it's your third.) The portraits and that skeleton-creature design are particularly striking.

If I could offer any advice, I would say use harder brushes.
