Talking Herionz's madness "A thousand days of discipline..."

Hi, I'm a self-taught wannabe illustrator/concept artist, also interested in the fields of animation and 3D modelling, I've been drawing for 2 years so far but just line, gesture from photos or life. And just this year I decided to go crazy and work as hard as I can, without any art instruction on my back besides what I'm teaching myself from books and I read/hear from others, so any help would be warmly welcomed because I'm not really sure about what I'm doing.

I'm really messy with my workflow, I might need a little bit more of structure, I apologize for that. I'm also jumping between areas, but right now I'm kinda focusing on working over colour/tone and form.

The title of the topic is because I set my long term goal to a thousand days to become acceptable in quality and design. Started the 3 of January, 2013.

Some things I've been doing this past days.

I also draw on paper with pencils and ball-pen, will try to upload some scans or photos from it some other time.

    I'll keep studying.

Some perspective exercise, have to work on cast shadows, sun rays, and such. And some random studies, wanting to jump over face expression. Also I have to do more paintings, I struggle a lot with mass drawing and paintings.

Holy Mother of God! Again I say, shot for taking the time to check out my measely sketchbook Dam man, the quality and Variety of your studies are blowing my mind and it's refreshing to see someone building such a strong foundation! Not to kiss too much ass but your understanding of colour and form in such a short period of time makes me realise how much I need to put my ass into gear- cheers for the inspiration keep this up and oaks will be throwing money at you

Um as for critiques I have none! since you're skills rape my own but I'll tell you what helped me render tone in pencil since dammit your advice was golden But if you gave it a go I rate you'd own me, but what I do is first render the entire image as best I can in a lighter lead (HB) and then I'll render over it again with a 2B lead, which is bloody obvious but I found by initially rendering out the entire image lighter and then starting again with a darker lead to create a smoother look also very important is to render the entire form and only leave paper exposed on the absolute white hilights, also I found studying the way Miles Johnston rendered his earlier figure studies very helpful. Hop I didn't waste your time there

Please don't stop man- I'll be subscribing .

@Chris, @cmw, thank you very much!.

Studying a little bit more facial expression, and some dynamic quick poses I did trying to help someone, I'm considering studying anatomy from dynamic/gestural poses next.

I wanted to start studying masters, hoping it helps me, so I decided to do some Sargent study. I find really hard to keep everything inside the right proportions by painting something from scratch, also still having troubles with predicting how planes shift values, maybe I might have to start studying drapery.

3hrs, not even close to finished, lot's of mistakes but the good thing is that my color/value perception is becoming better (in comparison with a month ago). Also had a lot of fun spotting some of the accents that he uses.

duuuude your so bloody proactive! loving the expression studies, your quick shading of the face is very effective- shows your understanding of the form is flipping strong and in your use of line in the gestural demonstration- very descriptive, again, shows you know your anatomy, basically I'm saying that it's clear you know your stuff! Would love to see some original stuff applying some of the studies you've done, I rate your ready and if not- I'll be back to boost your confidence again! should also say- shweet Sargant study you are ballsy with your colour, I'm far too impatient to do that. Keep trucking dude, amped for your next post

Hey guys! Thank you for the encouragements!

Some quick things that I did the other day.

I've been trying to paint from memory but besides simple forms, I find it hard to do other things, I start guessing a lot and playing around instead of thinking where to lay down which values and which not. I'm thinking different approaches to try to fix the issue.

you never fail to impress man! - just quickly, thanks for taking the time to do a paint over of that's chick's face you did- can see now how the lighting should be affecting the tones thanks for pointing that out! and DAM those are some tasty studies- can see your taking out of them as much as possible, learning some stuff myself buy just looking at them and your last piece is giving me an art boner your composition surrounding elements, really draw me to the focal points of the horse and the zombie dude in the foreground, was that intentional? like I can see it being an illustration for those card games- really bro would love to see it rendered out some more

Hey Chris and SophieW! Thanks for the wonderful comments!.

Feel like I've been wasting time this past days, not doing much work not finishing anything, I'm planning on a schedule to focus my studies. Also I'm going to try to focus more on painting than on line. And color, although just now seems I'm grasping a little bit how to use value. Not very proud of much of what I did here. Have to work harder.

Some of them are from imagination, some still-lifes from my room (found the orange light coming through the slit of the door really interesting, but didn't quite get it well, room was really dark), some quick hand value paintings (trying to play around with a ref under 5 min each, not quite well, probably would be best to spend 15 min each and do them better) and an unfinished photo study, still having a lot of troubles with faces (damn they are the thing that I find hardest).

oh and some shrimp studies + imagination, seeing what could I recall of them. Planning on trying painting some also, found out some translucency and subsurf effects rather cool on them.

@Mosen Thank you very much! I usually draw around 6h every day, but I try to do more, and also sometimes I do less xD. But remember that the important thing is not the time, but the amount and the quality that you do, which is something that I should be remembering to myself more often.
@Joe777k7 Thanks again dude! And that's it! Must be the eggs and the nuts, I rarely eat them, damn I'm going to start right away!.

A couple landscape studies, a landscape from imagination (before doing the studies), trying again to sketch a face (not getting it right yet, going to start studying the muscles of the face, and more skulls), a quick color sketch from reference (birds) and a 1h 30min long still life, which I see that I should have pushed the values of the highlights and light areas even more.

@Joe777k7 Thanks! It would be awesome to add you on skype! Don't worry, painting is really forgiving XD. I'll look into Scott's dvd's, think I have seen some notes from sketchwiki about it.
@Eclip-se Man, I'm not going to be your future, your future is going to be way bigger than me, also, I have a long road still ahead, very long, as you do!.

Random phone photos from my sketchbook, lot of studies of my left hand, my feet, others feet, a lot of imagination portraits, one from ref, part of gesture exercise, studying loomis eyes, also doing some on my own, a self portrait (have to try out some digital), some random stuff and a failed painted sketch from imagination.

Wow man you are doing some killer work!! That girl's face rendering looks awesome!!!! Also, here is my repsonse to your comment in my sketchbook:
"hahah thanks man! Yea getting use to drawing without VPs and a horizon line just takes time. Practicing Scott Roberston's warm up stuff on his first Dvd got me to get somewhat okay at it. I usually never use vps and horizon lines unless i get to bigger scale stuff like buildings and what not. Thanks for stopping by!!!"

Keep killing it man!! Your doing great!!

@V3T, M.Calza, lionheartGFX, Joe777k7 Thanks for your advices and comments, will be replying over your respective SB soon.

Some photo studies from today, 2h each, and a quick self portrait sketch from a past day, wanted to try out a digital one, will try another one soon with more detail, problem is that keeping a face gesture over a mirror, at the same time as you paint, for a long study is tiring as hell XD.
