Liam, you're pencil's are so damn sharp. Cut the eyeballs sharp. It's a wonderful thing. Really good stuff, expressive no matter what your sketching. Occassionally I'm craving some tighter areas on the paints, like a head or a hand that emerges from the loose lines and fill out completely.. but what's my deal because this is your sketchbook. Anyway keep them coming. Five stars!

Duuudeee!!!! thanks a whole bunch for the encouragment your post
really boosted up my entusiam in doing more experiments and in
not allowin the downs in my work to stop me form keeping on
trying to get better, your idea about seeing only the feet while
walking on the stairs of learing its rigth on the money, I must not
focus on my clumsy feet and instead I should be looking up towards
    my goals

Well aside that your doing sum really cool work aroud here, Im really
diging the textures on the bear in the first page, and the fellow smoking
feels really natural in his stance, last page figures could use some more
loving on the knees they look a bit bone less, nothing mayor tho.

This one has sum photo realistic qualities that mixed with you
paintery style that truly rocked my socks:
    july6th25xg.jpg

    So does this one:
    june28th26gc.jpg

Your dedication and experimenting is a huge inspiration dont
ever stop man, killer stuff your doing lately
(not that you werent doing killer stuff before but hell your getting
even better now a days )

    liam...

Thought it would be prudent to state just how impressive your pages are... Love the direction your digital has taken over the last couple of pages....How much is PS and how much is painter??? Any tips on cross pollenation????

Some standard fare as far as crits and advice are concerned,,but what the hey,,,,,,

I think you could benefit from some sort of pre-peice thumbnail study on a lot of the digital.......maybe not the more crowded,,,atmospheric scenes,,,but when there is just one figure and a bit of chiroscuro,,,it is helpful to know the tonal layout beforehand so you can "design" the way you lay it down more in terms of directional strokes and being more prescient through complex areas like knees and shit in the actual painting.....

In a lot of the pencils that are more finished and character oriented,,,I could see you establishing some more volume and punch by working some of the shading out of the confines of the figure itself...By this I mean plopping a bit of a shadow under some and definitly adding some darks around and behind some of the forms...An example would be to draw the core shadow of say, an arm....and then instead of drawing a line to define the outline of the arm, shade outward from where that line would be, you know? It gives a drawing more interactivity w/ the ground (surface, not firmament) It is a good way to get a lot of work out of your reflected highlights and forms that are only a tiny peek out of complete shadow......

You already do it real well in the paints,, but it seems like you do because you are cutting things out more with tonal shifts toward white in that context, leaving more passages of shadow from inside the figure directly to the bg and ground you are working on... In order to bring that into your analog pencils, you have to selectively darken areas w/out the benefit of a new layer option,,, so the process is different. Since you eastablish a lightsource so well,, for you it could be as simple as just laying the pencil on more of a slant and getting more out of your marks, a less recognizable "line" if you will.

okayyyyy,,,guess it just takes me a while to explain simple shit, hehe.

    bye now
