I found that doing line drawings and attempting to render using values only is very different. Here is my latest attempt:

    And here is the ref:

Looks a little better i think, it had more to do with the angle of the wrist or the cuff as it met the hand.

i guess my point was you need to study more carefully what youre looking at. which studies help you do. your drawing is significantly different from the thing youre reffing.
guys like elwell have studied so much they understand the anatomy really well and can draw this stuff super accurately because of it. not just lines but volumes.

I agree with Velocity Kendall. You're not drawing what you see but what you think a hand looks like. Look how straight and rigid yours hand drawing looks whilke the fingers on the original are curvy. You say the fingers looks like sausage because they do, you draw a cylindrical form all the way, losing the bumps created by the inter phalangial joints. The back of your hand is a square while the hand slightly widen from wrist to metacarpian-phalangial joints. Take a look here: http://qcmcursusinfia1.e-monsite.com...de-la-main.jpg
Don't be discourage, you're not the only one struggling with hands!

Well, in this case I did initially do a line drawing but it was a trace of the original since I am doing value studies with this painting. I did deviate from the original trace a bit to compensate for the strangeness of my initial rendering of the hand, sort of trying to use a trial and error method of adding and subtracting mass. Anyway, thanks for the input I think I understand what im doing wrong and will do an update later.
