    All Day, Every Day

    Hey all!

I've recently turned 20 and I'm about to take on my final year studying game design. As the title suggests, I aim to stay focused and draw + study as much as I can. I've been stumped this last year, so hopefully it's a little different this time around

Critique is much needed and appreciated!

Starting off with studies and sketches from 2011

Hey! Welcome to conceptart.org. All day, every day is definitely a good slogan for anyone who wants to improve. Just stick with it!

Your value studies are good, sometimes hit and miss but overall very good. Just make sure you aren't making the contrast too great. If you really want to work on how light falls on objects (i.e. the main cause of value difference, aside from the natural color of an object), you could set up a still life and draw it using only three values: white, grey, and black, no blending. It's a great way to train your eye.

@Fungus: Thank you for the feedback and welcome! hahaha now to stay motivated

I'm definitely keen on setting up a still life, that sounds great, although I'm a little confused by no blending?

As other people have said you're already quite good, especially some of those pencil sketches in your first post which stand out to me. I'd say watch out for the construction on some of your faces. It caught my attention that the liknesses were kind of off on the GoT portraits. Just pay more attention to your underlying linework.

    Keep it up

p.s. drawing while leaning means skewed faces indeed haha. Flipping saves you there.

@jondawo: Thank you! I do notice it when I look at the GoT faces. I'll keep that in mind, I've found it hard staying true to the linework when it comes to digital painting, ends up looking completely different

Your stuff is very inspiring! I am so glad you're sharing it with us! I really really really like the drawing in #9 with the wolf skin on her head. It's GLORIOUS. I hope to see it fully rendered!

Oh and! And!! The mother nature! With the crinkly limbs. Great work!

I can't wait to see more!

There is a great amount of improvement within this one page. Every time you do observational studies your imagination drawings become better. I would recommend focusing more on anatomy and gestures. Also you're getting better with values in the last posts, keep it up!

Hey, thanks for dropping by. Thought i'd say a few things.

Be careful when you do your studies. Right now all of your graphite studies have fuzzy lines, that's somethign you want to get rid of eventually. Try to do some studies with a pen (charcoal for life-drawings), it'll force you to think what you are about to draw and will help to get your lines more decisive.

Also, right now some of your studies are 10-15% off as far as proportions are concerned. Try overlaying the original image with yours in photoshop when you are finished just to see what you did right/wrong. Accuracy is very important when drawing the human figure because we are so used to seeing it that whenever somethign is wrong (even a little) we notice it immediatly. Another good exercise for accuracy is to really take your time. Make a few very long studies (2-5hrs) but make shure they are 100% right.

Congratulations on taking life-drawing classes, that is very important and will make a huge difference if you stick with it!

Also, last but not least, I do like your concepts from number 16 as well as the reaper.

    Keep drawing!
    Sketchbook

A creative artist works on his next composition because he is not satisfied with his previous one. When he loses a critical attitude toward his own work, he ceases to be an artist. - Dmitri Shostakovich
