Maybe someone will be able to answer this for me. I recently got my hands on a Chales Bargue drawing course book, I was wondering what is the exact point in it? If you are just copying everything without guidance is their really any point in it?

Well, in fact by "soft" i was speaking about using brush with opacity, which in most of your works you do.
But the most powerful ones to me are when you use only 100% opacity brush or mostly.
And about your book, to my opinion there is no point at copying everything just for copying, as in everything,
if you don't understand what you are doing, and for what purpose you'll improve in a way, cause you practice,
but not in the most efficient way to me.
Maybe you can try to copy some drawings of your book but focusing on one thing at a time, like only light/shadows, then move on volumes, etc..

Hey again bouroune. Yeah I do put my hard brush opacity down to 85% once in a while, I will go back to 100% from now on though since it seems to looks better. Today I really f***** up, I done some environment studies and they looked like mud. And I dare not offend your eyes with them. So here is just a warm up I did before them. I am gonna stick to my sketchbook for the day and try not get overly frustrated.

I am probably just shooting in the dark here but if their is someone out their that can give me a direct answer on how to learn to SEE colours, I would appreciate it. I have been going through colour theory and while it has been helpful, seeing colours is a bit of a problem for me. For example, trying to see the skin tones. I can find the value, but not the colour.

What worked for me was making my own hand-picked palette. First I collected craploads of pictures with colors I liked or made me go "wtf how'd they get THAT color?" and used the eyedropper to collect them, then I organized them into categories based on hue (Reds, Red-Oranges, Oranges, Yellow-Oranges, Yellows .etc) which started out as 16 categories, I started getting hues in between those hues so I ended up with 32 categories with 324 colors overall.

As I went through the process I got accustomed to the colors I picked because I got to see each one in the color-choser and compare them all side-by-side, eventually I started to reject picking certain colors because I'd think "I could just make that with this and that hue I already have". Or I already had something 'close enough'.

I learned how to 'see' colors according to my palette's colors which where familiar to me ("This yellow-green would be good substitute for that yellow-green, this cyan-gray would work well for that cyan-gray, mixing these two colors would make that color .etc).


May or may not work for you, but really the secret is becoming familiar with as many individual colors (and color relationships) as possible so you can more easily identify the hues in an image and reproduce them.

Hey V3T, you'are doing fine so far, I'm liking some of your approaches but, you might want to focus more over simplifying what you see, in a way that you can recall, don't try to see all the values and all the colours, try to analyse first, then pick those things that you want to show. The more experienced you become, the more you can add to your knowledge. Loomis is really helpful talking about this topic, I think either in "Successful drawing" or "The eye of the painter". Think about your strokes, think about the simple forms. About frustration, that's good! Frustrated means you are learning, as long as you keep breaking walls, but you will have to live with it , I think I'm 80% of the time frustrated myself, but just use it to fuel your training, although sometimes is just best to do something else for some time, best is that if you feel frustrated, try to read some books about drawing/painting, from time to time you can find some answers that way. Hey V3T! Thanks for your reply back at my SB. Your guess was half right! I do lurk around /ic/ a lot because it's a great way to get constant information going around, the problem is that usually most of that information is redundant or not useful, but from time to time you stumble among great instructional or reference material which in another way I wouldn't have thought about it, but I rarely comment back or post my work there, only sometimes over the studies threads because it helps me to compare things out with other people, and gives me some insight.

About your environments, think that some perspective knowledge might help you with these things, it looks rather flat to me, lacks some clear foreground, middleground and background. Maybe try out over the next days some black and white thumbnails, see if you can put simple things in perspective (like row of trees, or houses, or rocks) with different values, or do some landscape studies first!. But don't worry, wanting to do something is just the start, to learn to do something, you have to keep trying!.

I agree completely about /ic/. It can be great to compare and maybe find that one Jewel that gives you a better look at what you are doing, but for the most part it can be a bunch of guys screaming abuse at one another. Thanks for the help on the landscapes, I really needed it =]

Hey Danny, thanks for stopping bye =] Sadly I think all of us expect every study to transform us into amazing artists, but it is all building blocks, we will all get there eventually lol.

So here is some anatomy studies, a quick sketch of the statue of you know who and an unfinished figure study that was taking too long. I'll do more later.

So I did a quick doodle to go with those studies just to get used to throwing down some paint and I also done a quick Bargue study, probbaly should have done it slowly though.

Really screwed everything up, from the anatomy to the lighting to the well.. Like I said, everything. Back to studying.

You´re doing great, I can already see some improvements since I last commented on your sketchbook. I think the face on your last imaginary piece looks good, When it comes to lightning, I learned alot just painting fruits. Painting easier things so you won't have to think about perspective, design or anatomy makes it alot quicker to learn. Studying anatomy, colour and lightning in just one single picture is to much to take in, atleast for me

Thanks for stopping by, man. You have a good sense of construction and perspective already, but it will always help to push your understanding more. So I'd recommend some perspective to throw into your study mix. Scratch that. I recommend A LOT of perspective work. A few other guys on here and I are going to start a perspective study thread, actually, so I'll link it to my sig when it's up and you and whoever else interested are encouraged to come and study/share with us.
