I am probably just shooting in the dark here but if their is someone out their that can give me a direct answer on how to learn to SEE colours, I would appreciate it. I have been going through colour theory and while it has been helpful, seeing colours is a bit of a problem for me. For example, trying to see the skin tones. I can find the value, but not the colour.

hey man nice progress already. Latest face is a nice improvement but the main thing im seeing is not enough confident shapes. A lot of messy edges and rendering all the half tones before having a clear seperation of light and dark which gives you a good solid base to then work from. Like I said making really nice progress but thats the main thing to focus on, be confident in your shapes

Since no one answered your colour qustion, I thought I could contribute a couple of things from some recent experience - forgive me if I am so late this is redundant. It can take quite a lot of time to rig your brain into recognising colours, and practising the way you are is definitely going to get you there if you keep at it. These are just tips that I have found helped give me a bit of a leg up, though I am still trying to improve it myself. Feel free to cherrypick.

Doing some drills with photos to guess the colour can help a bit. Matt Kohr has a couple of these on CtrlPaint here and here. Not the most exciting exercises, admittedly, but it is a nice little warm up before painting. Something I also suggest is doing those exercises with masters' paintings, such as Rembrandt and Sargeant.

Something I find sometimes helps, usually on particularly difficult studies, is to whip out a red pen (well brush), make a new layer, and do a 'post-mortem' of sorts. Bring the reference material into photoshop if you haven't already, and between that and your painting, describe the behaviour of the light by writing and drawing all over the painting. Directions, warmth/coolness of light & shadows, eyedropper comparisons between the original and your own to see if you are making recurring mistakes, etc.

Drifting around CA, I have seen a few people doing 100% opacity challenges; turning off all opacity and flow tools on their brushes and doing a study purely by picking colours - no blending. It is difficult to start off with, but it does force you to solely concentrate on colour. There is also a "tiny study" exercise (I think it originated from Ctrl Paint as well), that basically involves making a very small study - probably less than 250px at the longest side, and picking the biggest blocks of colours - it seems to work well for landscapes.

I don't know if you have read up on colour relativity, but if not, try giving it a look, because it is a very powerful tool for a painter. Our brains make everything look different in the context of other colours, as well as wanting to approximate anything they can to save processing power, so it is a tough thing to learn. I agree with tfsean I think you need to focus more on fundamentals-do more still life practice were you try to measure slowly and be accurate with the shapes you place.
its clear you are working hard- just focus on the basic things and good things will happen.

nice updates since i last visited! i would suggest more contrast in you values and a bit more saturation in your colors to bring it out a little bit. in your imagination work this is a problem, dont be afraid of going darker or stronger with the values and colors. when you do studies really take note of how dark and what color the shadows and lights are. anyways keep practicing man, ill check back soon!

Hey man, thanks for swinging by my SB and taking the time to share. Ctrl Paint is in fact on the list, however I've seen most of the free stuff, and find Matt has a tendency to want to teach alot of the shortcuts and digital tricks Photoshop has to offer. While right now I need to develop some comfort with free handing it with a tablet for now and some of that stuf fis beyond me for now. But I do like his stuff and approach, so I intend to get to all his stuff as well as purchase some tuts from him. Thanks for the suggestion though, solid. Also, since I'm here. I just want to say you're showing great improvement since page one. You've got some rad studies for sure! I look forward to more!

yop, Nice studies in there, some of those really stands out from the others, like the man with the cap from 4 february.
I would suggest you to work more with hard brush rather than your round soft ones, or only for some subtile part of your paintings.
Your renders are better and more powerful to me when less soft.

Soooo, I done some studies and a still life (I see everything that went wrong with it.. Oh the pain of failure), I even done an imaginative piece that I managed to fuck up beyond repair. The head was completely off and I had rendered most of the piece by the time I realized so it was un-salvageable.. It did teach me that I suck with figures, so back to them I go.
