Andrew Loomis vs Michael Hampton Figure Drawing

I am currently stuck between two books, Figure Drawing for all it's worth by Loomis and Figure drawing: design and invention by Michael Hampton. The hampton book would cost me about 15 dollars more than the loomis book to get in canada. I will be supplementing the books with some Glen Villpu drawing manual videos.

I don't have unlimited funds at the moment, is the Hampton book worth the extra 15 dollars that it would cost me to get it?

    Thanks

I don't know anything about the Hampton book, but Andrew Loomis books are available for free online as PDFs, so you might not even need to choose

"Everything must serve the idea. The means used to convey the idea should be the simplest and clear. Just what is required. No extra images. To me this is a universal principle of art. Saying as much as possible with a minimum of means."

  6. If you are a relative beginner, buy Loomis. Once you have a good sense of gesture, that is, a relatively fast and simple way to summarize a pose and its action, it is time to move on to Hampton's constructive anatomy. For gesture, Vilppu is a good choice, although Loomis' mannikin serves the same purpose. A cheaper book on constructive anatomy is Bridgman's 'Complete Guide to Drawing from Life'.

Go with Loomis, buyers have kept those books in print for 70 years. It must be worthwhile information.

Agree with dpaint the Loomis book is excellent buy a hardcopy you will get more use out of it and the images and text is far superior. Support the publishers by paying them the fair price for their merchandise. No publishers, then no book illustrators! Simple as that.

I have seen them both. Loomis had a more appealing drawing style (to me, anyway), but his figure drawing book is not a substitute for an anatomy textbook; it does include some antomy, but chiefly deals with more general things. Hampton delves much deeper into anatomy, but I find his representation of the figure inexact - too much whimsy, not nearly enough hard reference. A friend once told me that did not matter because a beginner won't even notice such small deviations from the reality, but I think that is actually a reason NOT to recommend Hampton to a beginner.

Overall i think Loomis wins. If you add something like Sheppard's "Drawing the Living Figure" to it, that should be enough to keep a beginner occupied for quite a while, and in the right direction.

P.S. Since Loomis books are back in print now, please stop recommending the digital downloads of scanned ones.

I'm so disappointed, from the thread title I was expecting a figure drawing of Andrew Loomis vs. Michael Hampton. TWO MEN ENTER, ONE MAN LEAVES!
