Telling everybody your goals = recipe for failure.

How many people get on here and publicly make new years resolutions or tell everybody they want to do this or that or work for this company or that company. Well guess what, not the best thing to do if you want to actually succeed.

The Power of Negative Thinking. The article talks about not setting goals, among other things.
I was once on the receiving end of a critique so savagely nasty, I marched straight out of class to the office and changed my major (sketchbook).

    Makes sense.

Personally, I find it's a similar (dangerous) scenario when frequently posting artwork for public viewing.
The posting of artwork becomes the self-indulgent goal, rather than working towards something for yourself, or any other reason.

i get what you mean, its possible to drink the koolaid slightly and start doing what you think people want to see...which is good for commercial design work (it gets you more work) and maybe less so for art from da heart
..but its a rare artist who wouldnt rather have his or her art on display than hidden away in a cave. well except cavepainters

I find posting work a side action of the real goal for the piece. I post my work a lot and I get a lot of work because I post my work a lot. Don't make goals so I can't share those. Maybe I'm an underachiever.

I guess I don't see how posting artwork interferes with a goal. I post my finished artwork all the time and I also sell it and get work that way.

Hah! The best way is to just pretend you don't have any goals at all!

...Yeah. That's what I do. Just pretend.

I post artwork with mad abandon, too. The further it spreads, the better for me...I hope.

I do find showing somebody an unfinished piece means I struggle to finish it. I'm not sure what that means.

maybe it means you felt it was finished, or looked better left artfully unfinished. maybe.

But one of my goals since july was to withstand the temptation of the bowl full of sweets that stands in the office...
After announcing that I don't want to eat from it again, my coworkers generously helped me out with that by eating the sweets themselves .
