    Chris's Sketchbook

    Hey guys,

I've been drawing for most of my life from just pencils in sketchbooks to 3d work in maya, then a couple of years ago got into acrylic painting on canvas. About six months ago picked up a tablet to get into digital painting.

I much prefer concept art style paintings, mostly landscapes but I like vehicles and characters too. I created a profile on DeviantArt just a few months ago and in one of my recent pics someone recommended I start a Sketchbook on here. So, here I am.

Definitely interested in any feedback anyone can give regarding my work. I try to draw as often as I can (which isn't everyday regrettably) and I just want to get better and better.

Without further delay, here are most of my recent pieces.

Nice stuff man! I would say just keep studying vehicle design, and working on life anatomy. The variety and imagination is there. Just keep it up.

Here are a page of 30 second gesture drawings I did from the following site earlier this week. Definitely need a lot of work on these. :/

Heres my drawing for today. Study from a picture. Couldn't get the foreground right tho. In the pic there were a bunch of ferns and the water was frozen. I like how the mountains turned out overall.

You got some nice stuff here, keep it up :]

One thing you could improve on is lighting and tonal values. For example, hard reflective materials like metal, glass, etc will generally have crisp strong highlights with hard edges. Be mindful of where the illumination is coming from, and its colour temperature. For example, a warm light source like a fire or the evening sun will give cool shadows (dark muted blue/purple, not black, try not to use pure black). Water can be tricky to paint, as it is transparent and yet reflects the sky, the opposite shore etc (depending on calmness of water). I would recommend doing quick tonal/colour studies from photos. Having a gist of how colours and light work will really push the realism of your creations.

Thanks a lot. Really appreciate the detailed response. Will try to get some tonal value studies done. I definitely agree that it is a weak point for me.

Another photo study. Pretty happy with it overall except for the tree didn't turn out too well.

May be my last pic of 2012. Although I'm not working tomorrow so I might bang out another.

So I think this is pretty good for the linework on this piece. Gonna start colouring it soon. I feel like I've spent too much time on it already just to get it this far tho. I'm so damn slow with line work. I'm fairly happy with this so far tho. Gotta keep practicing!

Finished this warlord piece today. Was pretty fun to go through this whole process during this last week. I feel I learned a lot.

Let me know what you think.

something I've been working on this week. Probably add some sort of character on the rock in the foreground. Maybe a guy on a horse looking at the castle or something...

Still working on this one. I changed the colour balance a bit and am starting to add the horse/hero character in the foreground. I think I will need to brighten up that dark black patch just behind the horse and to the left tho.

Keep it up mate, you are definitely doing some good things. Keep working on your imaginative ideas for your digital paintings but also try to work on your foundations, draw some figures from imagination, practice perspective and etc. Apply those foundations to the pieces that you have been creating and I am sure you will be awesome. Start sketching in pencil and post those up. You will be surprised how the traditional side can easily translate to the digital.

Got some more super quick gesture drawings today. Thinking of maybe doing a new piece with some sort of bowman fighting a monster or something so wanted to get some quick posing done.

Newest work. Ended up ok but not as awesome as I imagined. Had some real frustrating moments doing this one. I guess its not even really finished but I'm kind of sick of it so here you go.
