Need some perspective pointers

So I'm looking at photos and trying to ascertain the vanishing points, horizon, etc, like this:



All seems well and good using a bit of natural intuition. Then I get to this picture, and I can't seem to make the points converge... The lines of the bus vanish somewhere completely different to the building, and it seems wrong. Maybe there's lens distortion or something, or more likely I've got the wrong idea? My only thought is that I didn't create enough canvas space like in my previous picture so I'm not drawing the lines correctly because my intuition is wrong. Source image is here

Hm, on further examination I think this may be because:

* The lines on the right-hand building roughly converge to the horizon, they're just off because I didn't quite follow the lines properly
* The bus is a seperate object! so of course it can point wherever it likes
* Perhaps the lines of the left-hand building isn't parallel with the lines of the right

Yes, that photo is Times Square, looking south, where Broadway intersects diagonally with Seventh Avenue. The blocks on the left and right aren't parallel to each other.

...and that bus is in the act of cutting across lanes, so it isn't parallel to anything.

And not all of those buildings are rectangular. That's gonna complicate things.

The city plan isn’t square there, nor are all the builbings, as QG said.

besides all of the things mentioned those photos are heavily distorted; probably shot with a 28MM wide angle lens which is bending everything or even worse a shift lens. You need to use a 55MM lens to get closer to normal vision.

I'm also in the process of trying to level up in perspective, and I thought I'd just share something that has made a huge difference-- I went to the art store and bought a meter or so of durular (or acetate, or vinyl, or any clear, plastic material) cut it into pieces and drew a single one point perpsective on each one-- now, on my light table, I layer the different pieces together to create up to three point perspectives and it's been an awesome learning tool. I'm WAY better at perspective in general now, and also no longer have to draw out grid lines on an artwork directly.

Do you have a photo of those durular perspective grids together? I'm just trying to wrap my head around that.

Every object has a individual vanishing point in relation to your perspective dont use one objects vanish point for another if its not gonan be totally lined up the same like a grid, but they both have to follow the perspective depth in relation of the horison line.
