ROUND #283 – Storm Dragon

ROUND#281: Storm Dragon

Dragons come in all shapes, colours and elemental properties. This week your task is to design a storm dragon, one with the ability to harness the raw power produced in storms of all kinds. The idea here is that the dragon would be dormant, or significantly less powerful between storms, but upon the first signs of storm clouds might awaken and wreak havoc (or whatever else a dragon with the power of storms might do) using it's ability to harness wind, rain, thunder and lightning. This can take the form of a breath weapon or whatever other dragon-ly power you decide to give it. As an added challenge, I'd like your dragons to be illustrated in a storm scene, preferably (though it will not be a requirement) using one of it's storm-themed powers. Think about what physical traits the storm dragon might have, especially in terms of pre-existing dragon tropes. Try to think if there might be a physiological reason the dragon only gains its powers during a storm. Think: shape of the wings, composition and length of it's spikes/horns/spines, even colour and really try and make your dragon really fit the theme in terms of it's appearance. Due to the time of year, I will be giving you two weeks on this one. Use it wisely.

Round requirements:

- The creature must be recognizable as being a dragon

- The creature must have the ability to harness the power of storms while they are in progress, but be dormant and/or powerless at other times

- The creature should be illustrated in the middle of a storm

Looks like i'm first to get the ball rollin, some thumbnails just to try and get a feel for some ideas. I'm abit of a dragon noob so abit generic i guess. The idea is to have it with some kind of antenna which attracts lightning and the energy from storms, or somethin along those lines. crits and suggestions welcome always

Whohoo.. Great theme! I'm quite sure I'll participate for this round as well (long time since my last one!).
Anyway, here is my first sketch:


The dragon is meant to 'harvest' electricity through its tail in its body. It can use this saved energy to attack other creatures or just for the fun of doing so
Also I tried to approach a quite unusual design for the wings, though I'm not sure yet if it works. Because the wings need to stand the strong winds of a storm, I thought of giving two arms for each wing- the back one will be probably much more slender than the other one, because it's just for stabilize the dragon.
The dragon has no other arms/legs, so usually it would live in the air (preferably a storm) or in the water.

I'm new here and trying on this one. Sorry for my not so perfect english, it is not my native language.

Description : Stormbringers are misnamed by the local population for they only get out of their caves when storms occurs. Their height varies between four and five meters and their lenght between ten and twelve meters. Living in a very rough and dry land, Stormbringers only get out once a year for their mating period, lasting one month. They use their horns to canalise lightnings and turn them into energy, making their scales glows. The more they glow, the more females are attracted. If two dragons wants the same female, they can use stored energy to throw strong lightning bolts and breath to their foes. Because mother nature is unpredictable, it happens that storms occurs in the dry season, waking the Stormbringers. Stories says that entire village and cities has been destroyed during these unexpected storms.

Great topic, especially because I suck at painting dragons. I find it's really hard to create a dragon that looks well designed and proportional.
