    Tomemac's Sketchbook

I have been lurking for a while but I guess I'll take the plunge since I don't see me making much progress. I would also like to say hello to everyone and thanks to everyone involved in Conceptart.org for the great work you guys are doing here.

As far as my goals go I would like to have a more painterly flare to my stuff but I feel I am not even close to anything at this point I can barely doodle with any sense other than flat.

Here is a pic based on a photo from the Sartorialist. I took huge liberties with just about everything on it. That is probably why it falls short.

And here is another with just some of my sketches. Again no real goal other than to practice. Did these off the top of my head.

Another quick one. All of these are digital btw. I did my first one on a mix of SKB pro and Painter the second in SKBPro and this third one in Painter.

Here is a pic done in my usual style. I have since imported the line art into painter and have begun practicing a more painterly way of coloring. So far it is going dismally but I thought I would post the original colors for later comparison. This was done 100% on Sketchbook Pro 6 from sketch to final colors and effects. Name: Image0214.jpg

Here is the Corel Painter version. Clearly I have no idea what I am doing I didn't even know how to get rid of the lines ; ; I think I am just fearful of painting over them. No clue how to go about it more methodically. I guess I should just make a bunch of doodles and paint over the lines until I get a method down.

Keep studying!! Im sure you will get better over time! So what exactly are your interests? I mean, what kind of art do you want to make? What kind of things do you want to draw? It helps you grow when you know what direction you want to go in. God bless you!

I would like to illustrate the human figure very well and with a painterly type of look. Every time I start to get into it though it just ends up so terrible i give up or things end up looking like a comic book drawing instead. It is discouraging. But I keep trying to draw and color as best I can.

Do more work from reference and aim for accuracy first, then exaggeration and modification. Your work is very inconsistent, which suggests to me that you do okay when you copy another artist, but get a bit lost when you don't. Go back to the source. Study the fundamentals. You can't progress very far by avoiding them.

Thank you for the feedback it is hard to come by sometimes =) Could you tell me which pieces need more work? I only used a reference on the 1st and 6xth pieces posted. The rest I dreamed up >..> Though I guess all of those need serious attention.

If you want to illustrate the human figure then make sure to draw a lot from the human figure, whether its from life or photos. I would suggest both if possible. Photos alone are okay though as long as its high enough quality because you can only take as much as you can see. Learn to break down the body and simplify it and then build from there. Try buying some books from artists like Andrew Loomis (Figure Drawing for All its Worth) or Burne Hogarth. Make sure to check the library for art books! And also check Youtube!
Do some master copies. By this I mean, study artists who have a style that you like and understand what they do. Get into thier heads. How do they start a drawing? How do they hold the pencil? What techniques do they use to shade or color? Copy a favorite artwork and make it as accurate as you can. Then try making something new and original in the same style of the artwork, using all that you learned. The point is to understand the mind of the artist. And remember, that a photo or a live figure contains all the information that you need. As an artist, it is your goal to see the information, select the information you want, and translate it onto paper through your medium and technique. All the old masters learned from life, taking what they saw and interpreting it onto paper.
Dont give up. Keep trying. Its like working out. At the start, one is weak but after working out day after day one becomes stronger and is able to run faster, jump higher, and lift heavier objects. Keep drawing and keep analyzing. Understanding is key, not what type of pencil or paper. So keep going! I hope to follow my own advice and share it with others soon! God bless you!

Have been playing Odin Sphere lately and decided to try my hand at some fan art of it. Was good practice it felt since I rarely do work on a single layer like I did with this piece. Done in Corel Painter 12.

    Hi,
your sketches look really cool and I really like them. For improving I can only say study anatomy and draw from life just like others already said. I´m doing the same ^^

Nice sketches. your sketches promises huge potential. I'll just echoe what other members said above, study fundamentals: Anatomy / shapes, perspective.

Got a new pose book here are my first few studies from it. Just sketching around I usually dont draw so much garb so it was a good challenge. I know the tsuka on the hilt are too creased but the pics on the book seemed way creased to me usually the tsuka is smoother. I must be going blind or it was just a bad sword hilt. But yeah. Keeping on practicing. Despite my infrequent posting >.> Too ashamed to post a lot of my doodles.

Testing the new uploader. I can't tell what I what I am doing with it because it shows no previews or even where the uploaded files end up. Plus verifying along the way is just making this really trying. Not that anyone looks at my stuff but yeah. I will likely just end up posting less. Since apparently calling an image an image triggers the security spam.
