I'm liking the the colors you are putting in your work. Those still lives are looking good, but along with your environment paintings could use more depth. Your figures are looking good, but look awkward due to proportions especially that gladiator. When working digitally I'd say flip your canvas back and forth. Keep working at that anatomy and keep posting! Keep posting and keep working hard :]

You've got some really nice traditional work and I really like the gesture sketches too Just keep studying and then try to put what you've learned into your own paintings from imagination.

You have a very misleading avatar, I never expected those wonderful traditionals in here! Great work, also on all the studies.

great work on these daily paintings
something that ive found helpful in making progress is to occasionally take the time to really put some hours into a single piece. your focus and observation can only go so far in an hour. working on a single piece for 3, 4, 5 hours or more if your determination permits, can help you see clearer, as you become more and more familiar with your subject and become more absorbed in it, which of course translates into a more accurate painting.

I just wanted say that I've seen you assist all the people beginning to draw and I really appreciate it. I have to say that I find your illustrations to be quite appealing and I really like the painterly look to your last digital piece.

There's some really beautiful stuff in here. I particularly like your bird paintings -- oh and the boats... oh and the food haha.
I think your best digital work are the ones that seem to have been apportioned in a more traditional way. The portraits of the red headed woman and the lady with the scarf, for example- have much more substance than the woman next to the apple (all in post 30.)
Take advantage of that fantastic traditional foundation you have and hold onto it in your digital work.

    Happy sketching

Thanks for dropping by my sketchbook!
Your studies and paintings from life are looking good, and I would definitely keep doing those!
You mentioned that you wanted to be able to paint from imagination. This takes a long time and a lot of practice. Keep studying from life, and don't be afraid to supplement your imaginative work with reference when necessary! The more you do, the more you will add to your mental library. But if you havent drawn/painted/studied it first, it's going to show when you try to make it up from your head.
You're definitely on the right track! Just keep going and don't give up!

    Some paintings

Now I'm painting 5x7 inches. On Fabriano paper using acrylics. The still lifes are from life and the figures from photo references.

I wonder if you have considered doing something incredibly imaginative with your painting skills?

Yes I'm thinking about it, but I'm still not so confident to do a piece from imagination.

It's cool to see you start drawing from imagination. Part of the reason why the face in post #25 is because value wise, they're all in the 2,3 and 4 value range from a value from 1 - 10 (1 being the lightest, 5 being 50% gray and 10 being the darkest dark). I would push your dark half tones some more. the dark area right underneath the cartilage of the nose would be darker as well as underneath the eye brows of the eye. You also have the same highlight value on the cheeks forehead and nose which wouldn't be the case. It also looks like you're using a soft brush. You should really use a soft brush when smoothing out transitions or creating softer edges.

I tried doing a paint over of it. Sorry. The drawing changed a little bit and that was a subconscious thing.

I only added a highlight around the nose and a little bit on the bottom lip. I also shaded the eye some more so it has some depth. The eye is really a ball so you should paint the eye like it is a ball. Eyes wouldn't be white but they would have subtle grays in them. I didn't want to spend too much time on this since I'm at work but hopefully you get the idea.

I still consider pencil drawing for the more important skill over painting, be it digital or traditional.
I honestly think that the artists who don’t know how to draw, or didn’t mastered the basic shapes,
values and proportions, will not be very successful at colors and with their paintings. That’s why
I try to push my graphite pencil ways much more than my digital paintings. Cause if you’re good with
pencils, your fundamental skills are good, then your paintings will have a much bigger chance
to look great. No matter how good you are with colors, if you use those colors on a badly proportioned
face, or a poorly designed subject, the piece will simply not look good. Not to go too far with this,
I would suggest that you draw more, graphite pencil and paper, draw a lot from life and try your
imagination also. You can always go color with your pieces later, when you get better. I realized
that there is not one greyscale painting study between your digitals and traditionals? You should
do them, cause they help tremendously with understanding values. As I said, you could do whatever
you want with colors, but if the values are wrong, then everything will look wrong. I think that the
same principles can be applied to digital and traditional paintings. You should do greyscale studies
digitally and traditionally also. My weekly paint schedule would look like; 5 days of greyscale paintings,
2 days of color paintings. Plus drawing an hour or more every day. Just a suggestion, and don’t
forget that it’s just me. I am not a professional or something, just a self thought individual.
Trying to think logically and to give you some valid advices, I hope you can get something useful
out of these lines. I am happy that you’ve decided to get serious with your paintings, and that you
have a strong will and a powerful dedicated approach. I wish you all the best in this year,
and many fun hours painting and drawing. We’ll stay in touch I hope, till our next meeting
take care, stay healthy and be good.

A fellow storyteller, I see! We need to get together sometime and spin a few yarns! On a more serious note, lovely work, im especially digging the traditional stuff. About the imagination stuff, just do it. You get better at it by practicing just like with non traditional. Flex that creative muscle and bulk up! Become a imagination HULK!

looking forward to the dragon and thanks for the advice,, do you have any advice for composition like maybe you know of a certain book on it possibly? i don't know too much about it besides the rule of thirds and using a focal point by either contrast or color saturation.

    Some ideas

Some sketches for characters and illustrations. I'm trying to be more imaginative, no references were used in this selection. And the last four pieces are for kids.

Hi blazingdimensions, I've posted a selection of my last sketches, in between them you can see my dragon. About composition the best book I've ever read about is called "Mastering composition", the author is Ian Roberts, I bought from Amazon. This book is for painters but it also help concept artists and illustrators. Take a look here: Link
