you know you're using photoshop too much when

Anyone get that thing where, you take a break from digital to do something trad, make a mistake and think and think 'ctrl+z' ... except it doesn't exist?

Well for me today, new levels. I was putting a Christmas card into its envelope, and deciding which way it should face for best effect. So I took it out, swapped it around... hmm, nah, better the first way. started to fiddle with it, and then thought oh, just undo. Then stopped, confused for a split sec, because I wasn't sure how to activate the function.

    Anyone else slowly becoming strange?

well at first I read that as 'apply last filter' to pants. I'm thinking... you have urges to render your pants with interesting textures?

I think everyone used to digital does the ctrl-z thing, but I wanna hear of people trying to use the lasso and move tools to fix a composition.

Whenever I finish a stage of a painting, I do have the urge to hit command-s and copy it onto a backup disc... And then I briefly panic when I can't save. And then I remember I don't have to.

    Been there.

I've even caught myself thinking that I ought to save my game in real life. Played too much Fallout 3, I think.

    All the time.

Also when using Maya, Photoshop and After Effects simultaneously that makes things interesting...

When drawing on paper with a pencil I sometimes try to make the "brush bigger" or right click to change brush...

I totally played that game too much. One of my all time favs.
You've just reminded me of something though... when I was about 20 and really shy with girls, I began comparing that to RPG's where you just wander around uninhibited and chat to anyone without any worries... so I thought, if I can convince myself I'm in a game I can go out and it'll just be like an adventure, I'll meet people and stuff. Slightly creepy, I know, but it must have kinda helped because I did end up with friends and not shy with girls and stuff.

So you're fumbling for the button on the pencil? heh

These things will only get worse when they bring out a partially mind-controlled interface for Photoshop et al.

Yeah it happens to me a lot too. I draw a lot in my sketchbook these days and I always want to make layers and make small adjustments but I can't. It's even worse when you use some tool you can't erase with, haha. First world problems, eh?

But it's a good reminder too! Makes you realize that you should plan better so I think it's healthy to keep a balance.

I've had this when reading. Finished a page and thought "scroll down" as my right index finger caressed the front cover of the book.

    It's called the Tetris Effect.
I also find that after I read a lot, I start narrating events in my head as they happen.

You constantly use a mirror as an Horizantal Flip substitute when working traditionally to check for mistakes.

Man oh man...you hit the nail on the head with this one.

I also used to get bad moments from playing WoW too much way back in the day. I recall being at the grocery store one day during the summer when it was really hot out. I didn't want to crawl back into my sweltering car to make the long drive, so instead, I thought to myself "hey! i'll just use my hearthstone to teleport me back home! the cool-down timer should definitely be refreshed by now." It took me almost a full 20 seconds standing there under the scorching sun in the parking parking lot to process why this wasn't going to work...needless to say, I put the major kibosh down on my playing after that.

haha! brilliant. I think I may have had some moments relating to wow... but it's been a while.
Needless to say, games have ensured that my fingers always hit a keyboard in the WASD + thumb on spacebar + little finger on shift configuration of dealing death, regardless of whether I'm about to search on youtube, draw something, or type my shopping list.

*not that I actually type my shopping list on my pc. That would be silly.
