Am i doing it right?

Hi, I'm a student and i've been practising seriously since early summer mainly from anatomical and landscape studies and from imagination/memory and I feel i've made little progress. Especially when it comes to detailing it looks really messy and it doesn't read.

Anybody got tips on their type of work or studies they do? And any good links to provide references for studies?

Work from life for both and study a system like Bammes, Bridgman, Loomis, Reilly or Vilppu for figures. Pick up Imaginative Realism by James Gurney. For landscapes Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting, JD Harding Lessons on Drawing, or Jack Hamm Drawing Scenery

The best link to good reference is your door. Go outside and observe how things and people work.

It's mighty hard to tell what halts your progress without seeing your work, though. If you want useful advice, you ought to post some scans that show the problems which you want gotten rid of.

Try slowing down and doing some studies where the focus is on getting things right, not fast. If you always rush through the details and say "good enough" then yeah, you're not going to get any better at them. Really think about what is supposed to be happening in that area. What is actually there? How should the light hit it?

Detail won't work if the underlying structure is flawed. It can take time to understand this but you want to start with the large broad forms and make sure they read before proceeding to the more specific. "Drawing Essentials" by Deborah Rockman is also a good book to use as a guide for your studies.
