ROUND #282, Demonic Speedster w/ variants

    topic:

    ROUND#282, Demonic Speedster w/ variants

This next week and a half (you'll have a bit longer to do this one so we can get back to our "Tuesday new topic" schedule) we'll be designing 3 variants on the same concept. Much like the spitter round 2 cows ago, you won't be able to illustrate an entire scene for your creatures to exist in. You'll only be able to show the creature design itself. With that said here's the brief...

Design 3 variants of a demonic beast that has the ability to move very fast. Because you won't be designing a scene for this creature to move through. You will need to show its capability for high speeds through your designs alone. Hopefully this will be a good challenge to amp up your design skills.

    Requirements this week...

    - you may NOT include a scene, or backdrop for your creature designs. Only include straight forward designs on a blank page layout for your finals. NO ILLUSTRATIONS!

    - the creatures must appear to be able to move exceptionally fast.

    - the designs must be demonic in nature. They are creatures that live in, or come from hell.

    Deadline:

    December 18th 7:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

    finals go here... http://conceptart.org/forums/showthr...70#post3598870

Here's my first idea for the creature. Gonna start with the other variants now.
Is it OK to fully render one of the variants and leave the other two looser, maybe just as sketches? That way you know the final creature and can easily picture the other two versions with the same finish.
I just really wanna paint this one but I don't know if I would have time for all three. Thanks.

I added another design to my thumbnail sheet; a little unconventional, but why can't demons have wheels?

really cool stuff guys, looking forward to this c.o.w

decided to focus on the terrain these guys would traverse; they swim around in magma and jump like tree frogs on land. their heads are inspired by dogs receiving a face full of quills after biting into a porcupine and attack by ramming their heads into whatever they're trying to catch.

Awesome designs everyone! Beautiful shapes Jimmy Zhang, and the silver color is great! Eclectix, i personally really like the wheel-design! It's fun and it definitely looks fast! Alexson the second version has awesome color and looks way scary! Philip those silhouettes are really nice, and i'm looking forward to seeing how the middle one will look. Rob Powell, your sketches are awesome like always. I really like the design at the top! Rynka I really love your design at the top left. It's very simple but it scares me, and there is something about the smile and the way it looks like it moves that's cool. Artka your sketches are beautiful and all the creatures look like they are super fast. Panketepang there is something in your sketches that reminds me of the awesome movie Titan A:E! This is a great compliment! Giby, the design for the mouth of the creature to the left is really cool. And i really like the eyes of the one on the bottom. Blazinwolf the movement in your painting is beautiful, and i love the creatures expression. NickyBeats, the design on the top row at the far right is the fastest looking creature so far if you ask me. It looks like it can burst into hyper-speed at any moment. Ricardops, I like how you have gone beyond the kind of animal anatomy that is what we associate with speed. They look very much like they all come from hell. Tyrus, i am very much looking forward to seeing where you are going to take the sketch. It looks very interesting and i hope you finish it! Doug Hoppes, i like the movement in your sketch and i hope to see more of this creature! Jarkuzy, the design at the top right and the one at the bottom left are my favourites. They are both inspiring and a little bit mystical. Like they come from a dark fairy tail. In a great way.

I have been wondering about this challenge and here is what i think is a fun problem. The animals that we think of when we think of speed are mostly cats, dogs, maybe some fish-like creatures, birds and maybe lizards and a few others. If these creatures that we are designing are from hell, they don't need to have any similarities with any animal from our world, right? When you come from, or live in hell, i guess you don't have to have any similar anatomy to anything fast in our world, and still move very fast. But, because we do know what kind of body moves fast in our world, is it impossible to make anything look fast to us, that doesn't exist and also doesn't resemble anything that we know is fast? This question doesn't need to be relevant for the challenge, i just thought it was interesting. Because the sketches i have been doing end up looking slow when i don't hint to anything that looks like a fast animal that we know of. It's hard to go for something that i can imagine coming from hell (that is to say totally nightmarish) and still make it look like it can move fast. i'm not at all trying to start a discussion about what this challenge is about or anything like that. I just noticed this and thought i'd ask if anyone else has any thoughts about this. Anyway awesome stuff everyone! And i love these weekly challenges!
Any critique is very welcome! I am here to learn! Thank you!

@AdamStolterman: Thanks =] I'll probably be colouring them closer to the deadline if I have time. In regards to your question, I've asked similar ones for most of my projects (e.g. how to make a flying, alien creature look like it flies, does it need wings? if it doesn't, do i risk alienating the viewer?). As you've found out, presenting things in an unfamiliar way often alienates the viewer; we're pretty stubborn when it comes to our expectations of what an archetype is supposed to look like. Using the speedsters as an example, they have to convey speed without context (environment, narrative, etc.) this leaves us with focusing on forms that we already associate with speed to get that idea across to the viewer (slender silhouette, angular, etc.). It seems like the fewer elements we have to explain things to an audience, the more we rely on familiar things to communicate our ideas successfully.

Here's my first variant. It's a sprinter that chases down large prey, hooking them with the curved bone of its' skull. It then spreads its' frill, bringing it and its' prey to a sudden halt.
