University Project, Please critique!

I'm currently in a Games design course and one of our projects was to pick a challenge and put it on here ^^; I'd really appreciate your critique, no matter how harsh it may be, i really want to learn ^^

The challenge i chose was:

Kingdom Arran: This kingdom is the northern most of the three and thus their clothes include furs and padded material to keep out the cold of winter which can be bitter. The eat mostly fish from the large lakes which freeze in the cold necessitating the use of sledges and animals that can survive on meagre rations. They also keep small bird type creatures that give off both light and heat. They pray to a god that requires ritual sacrifices.

Here's some ideas I've come up with for it ^^

I think the first one has the best mood and composition. I think there's too much skylight and too little torchlight on the foreground though. The fourth one has a nicely luminescent sky though. Winter landscapes are difficult because it's hard to achieve depth with snow everywhere but try to make the shadows on the foreground a bit darker than those on the background. I hope you noticed that challenge is closed by the way?

Yes i know it's closed, thankyou for the advice ^^ I chose a closed one because i don't want to enter an open one, i'm not good enough for that haha :-) Thankyou again!

I think you should continue doing more thumbnails, and focus on making your value composition readable. Did you see this post on muddy colors? http://muddycolors.blogspot.fi/2012/...humbnails.html Your lightning isn't very convincing in general, you would probably benefit from studying a few refs of evening light on arctic and torchlight/single light source in the dark.
