This is going to be a quick review that myself and a friend put together while desperately trying to finish and at the same time avoid writing a literature review for our projects.
Basically if you want to be a concept artist, illustrator, 3D modeller or animator - don't go here.
From the hight of what experience we have in this university it is astounding how many bad artists there are on our course. People who have no concept of any of the aesthetic elements. People who lack in basic knowledge so badly it spills over into their 3D modelling and animation. We have a Masters student who doesn't know how to draw a human figure. We are amazed and bewildered with the lack of foundation art training the students get in their studies. Life drawing classes is an extra calricular activity that you have to book 2 weeks in advance.
They don't advertise themselves as an art school. They advertise themselves as a school for getting you into the video games industry though. And they will get you there. The contacts you make in your time there, the competitions you'll participate and the work you will do (if you are willing) will all ammount to a great portfolio and excellent contacts.
To conclude, if you are prepared to take control of your own learning, the muster the motivation to improve your skill in generally a very undisciplined environment, this school is for you.
Pros:
They provide you with the tools
The networking opportunities are great
Low entry requirement
Cheap in comparison to other bigger schools
Provides you with full freedom to do whatever the hell you want, which proves detrimental to some students who require discipline to work.
Cons:
Little structure
No formal art training
No foundations training
Undisciplined - students are left to their own devices for most of the time
None of the lecturer's done anything big
Hope this will help somebody some day!
A.
