I really like those watercolors... and that last one is really nice, any progress with the landscapes? I'm looking forward for more, keep it up!
Thanks man, appreciate it. I have a few vacation days comming so I'll probably have time to finally dig into some landscape painting (scary).
update with stuff of the last few days

you know your stuff! from painting to line making. Thank for stopping by my page!
Thanks Yemi, I'm just trying to get better, nothing much yet but I do feel more confident with each drawing and I can see myself slowly improving. Keeps me going.
here is a small update
cheers
Sweet caricatures man! Really loving the personality you give you all of your drawings. The watercolor figures are also spectacular!
thanks Saraiva
Here's todays wakeup sketch. I had to rush it as he turned out to be far more work then I expected. I really want to start doing 2 sketches each morning instead of one, means I have to cut my 1 hour sketch into 2 half hour sketches. After the first sketch I always have a bunch of ideas about how to tackle what I fucked up in my first sketch but then I have to leave for work. Tomorrow I'm going to time myself and do 2 quick sketches instead of 1 study.

Felt really stressed this morning, which is strange, just comming out of bed and all. Need to relax, losen up those lines....
just having a off day I guess... Painting (oils) from live model wasn't going well yesterday, I guess that got to me. The likeness was there but I was having trouble pushing the contrast. Anyone know a good way to get a high speed crashcourse in oil color mixing and color contrast and that kind of shite? I was thinking the best school would be to just do a few studies after existing works that I like, learn from the masters...
Once I get my new phone I'll start posting some oil studies I do at the art academy I go to. Take some photo's while I'm there which I can't do atm.
Whoa, love your lines! Your portraits have so much life; keep at it man! Can't wait to see more.

wow awesome sb here! spot on sense of likeness and i can see you also use the shadow to imply form, great technique and really awesome results! theres really nothing to critique, try to always push yourself further and further, theres always room for improvement somewhere, look for it and work on it, and pleaaase post it so we can see! i love looking at your stuff!![]()

thanks man, shadows are everything
todays sketch is utter crap, but this is a sketchbook right, so I'm posting it anyway. Still have to start doing 2 fast sketches instead of just the 1 each morning. I really hate how I do my first sketch, takes me about 50 minutes, then I feel warmed up, ready to tackle all those mistakes I just made in my first sketch and then I have to quit and leave for work. torture, every single day!!!
stuff I notice
eyes are to far appart which is something that happens to me a lot and it really hurts the end result, just fucks with your brain. The linework is a mess, I suddenly realized that I wasn't going to get it finished so I went from slow concetrated mode to very fast dirty mode. The glasses for instance feel like such a missed opportunity. How much fun it must be to just nicly hatch the seperate planes (top and front of each circle, make the, working around highlights)... Same for the hat, there's no flow to it, it doesn't follow the light and flow of the face. damn....
Managed to do 2 20 minute sketches instead of one 50 minute sketch this morning. Felt good. More emphasis on likeness, I need that. I can render if I want, but it takes time, lots of time. Quick sketching is the way to go I think.

feels good to do some more cartoony stuff after that monstrosity of yesterday![]()

David, Thanks so much for stopping by my sketchbook! I love your work here, really beautiful stuff. Your linework is perfect, you make that hatching look so easy.
it reminds me of a friend of mine Dave Malan. http://davemalan.com/drawings.htm check out his work I think he is a kindred spirit.

LOL, I remind you of Dave MalanI wish mate, I admit that he's one of my big influences, he and Jan op De Beeck, both masters at hatching. The more I learn though the more I realize how far their level is beyond me. Frustrates me endlessly. Even if I had time to practise all day, every day I don't think I would master what they do in my lifetime.
here's todays sketch

hey David! dont think i have ever stopped by here before! i see your work all the time on facebook though, and i love it! good to see it all in one nice place though! great caricatures and sketches! keep it up man!

I love your watercolors. I am going to rip off your warm-cool paint wet-into wet method at my earliest conveniance. I like Dave too, but I wouldn't put him on a pedestal or anything. We went to BYU together, he is a pretty normal guy, and I don't think you are that far behind him. Especially in your pencil work. If you want to see some really fun hatching, look at http://beawesome.blogspot.com/ Kevin Keele is pretty incredible too, and a lot of fun.

cheers mate!
my watercolor experiments are still in the very very early learning stage, I don't know what the hell I'm doing and I'm still searching for stuff that works. I feel more comfortable working in oils (from dark to light) so I don't practise watercolor that often. I do admire good watercolor artists, it's such a difficult technique to master and it's just great and easy on the move, you don't need all that much to get something going. It sure has potential.
these last ones were done using my daughters watercolor set, she had just used them the day before and all the colors were all black and dirtyI do have more professional grade watercolors of my own but for quick sketching I like my daughters little watercolor set, the blue and the orange just works well together right out of the the box without having to mix to much.
PS: thanks for the blogspot link, I really like that guys art!!
fantastic workI love your drawing style

cheers

I agree, after the one I did last night todays sketch feels like a huge step back. Then again the sketch I did yesterday morning was so bad I didn't even post it. I think I do need a warm up and if I have that first sketch behind me I get more lose and things start happening more naturally/less forced. I guess getting up at 6AM and trying to do a single sketch still half a sleep before going to work does have its downsides as well.
Thanks for the feedback, if you have construction issues feel free to post a quick paintover if you don't mind taking the time to do one. It's not that I don't understand what you're saying but I'm probably missing a lot of stuff that you picked up. I can't see through your eyes and I do value a fresh pair of eyes greatly. I still get carried away when I draw and I just notice stuff to late, and I do realize the construction of my sketches needs serious work as well. working on that and I appreciate all the tips I can get
Currently my progress feels slow and with huge ups and downs but I do believe I get better, I just have to keep going. Posting stuff really motivates to make the effort. As for my oil studies, I'm at the stage where I get an ok likeness but the colors and strokes are still a huge mess, again its a slow process that I just have to go through. I'll try to post some oils from time to time (just don't expect anything fancy)
Hi mate! let me say something... Wow! Your caricatures are impressive, and your hatching style is really good. I'm a beginner and I'm searching for people better than me who can give advices on my works. And you are really a person who can help! I will appreciate if you have time to look at my SB and leave any suggestion, good or bad. Bad are best I sayThey make you grow faster and stronger. Excuse me for the chitchat.
By he way... if you know a secret to stay inspired let me know...![]()

Lucarky: I'll scheck out y're sketchbook. Keeping motivated takes discipline because everyone has ups and downs and you have to fight through the downs. at least that's how it is for me. I'm fighting through one right now.
this mornings sketch, fucked it up again...need sleep....

dude i love that last one! but i feel that the right part of the jaw its a but fuzzy i doesnt read as well as everything else, im nitpicking ofcourse man your sketches are awesome, i just want to give you thinks to work on, and about your method of working its imperative that keep on changing it when needed and knowing when to work fast and when to work slow, ther are times you really have to think and figure out how a partiuclar place of the face is working, look at some kevin chen portrait demos http://www.angelfire.com/art3/kchendemos/ its all mixed with gesture and figure drawing but there are several examples on how to simplify shapes there, take a look at those and see if you can change the way you draw ( or add some stepps if your process its already stablished)
i would love to see you branch out a bit, i know you love portraits and caricatures and are really comfortable around them but practicing other fun stuff will help you with your caricatures as well.

Thanks bro, that's a great source of info.
I know I have to start drawing all sorts of stuff, and I realize it all ties in together. I do start to think more in terms interlocking 3d forms and gesture where I used to just draw individual shapes that didn't interact at all. I have to build upon that, more structure, better breakdown of geometric shapes, better value relationships, etc... but its a lot to process... I have to give it time, I feel like I'm on total overload.
I'll get a sketchbook today, draw in it whenever I can and I'll post it up. I haven't used a sketchbook in years, I hate them. Time to change that.
