Quick update before I head off to bed. I'll render the background tomorrow hopefully, but I want it to remain some ambiguous, mystical place.

Great range of ideas from everyone so far, here's a second update for mine.

I'm very late to the party. Very chaotic so far. Hopefully will finish it on time...
SimianSmash - The tree foliage in the middle right of your piece is bang-on, really strong shapes and clean tones. More of that on the other side![]()

I like the layout and colors. perhaps ad something that suggest life.

Coming good

Very nice idea and rendering.
I'aria
beautiful pice. There is a lot of attention in the upper left corner when she has the head so near it, and also looking at it. But I it works.
Aria
Good start. At this point i think you should ad something that relates to the life theme
Dayle
Looking good. Much greek mythology feeling. Perhaps you could put some color in the shadows and polish small things like the hand with the unborn child.
Rynka
Looking good. keep on render it out.
Sushy
Great. The queen bee gives birth to the hole hive. I like the design and the warm colors relates to life. perhaps put a blur on the background to make her pop out even more.
panama66
interesting design. Maybe reef some cloth in the wind and fine tune her red drapery.
I'd like to push this one quite a bit further, afraid that I'm running out of time.
Here's what I've got so far, although I'm not sure I'll be able to finish it in time.

AriA Please keep in mind this is a character design challenge and right now yours is more of a creature design. We still have a day left, so perhaps you could get something more character oriented submitted before the deadline.
If you have any questions concerning this please let Havok or myself know.
Quinn
Don't know if I'll finish... Gah! Too much detail! Need to stop myself! Ack! *Dies in pool of own blood*

There's no way in hell i'll get this done, as I just saw this about twenty minutes ago and doodled up something for fun. I'll try and hop on the next round, I need more work on drawing people. Best of luck to those in the competition!

@l'Aria: I know this is late but I just realized that your character being so far to the left, and facing in said direction, leads us out of the image. This is all the more disconcerting because in your final you have some kind of egg/orb object in the background to the right of your character. Again, sorry that it just dawned on me...

Some updates
Looking good JanJager
just had a general thought to everyone about the theme here...
is life opposing death?
is not Birth the opposing thing to death in reality?
and then both death and birth are two moments that are both part of life.
then again this is not a philosophy thread![]()
Just a quick sketch for this one. Had a fun idea, no time to finish though

Alexanderjr: No crits here, yours is my favorite design by far. It perfectly fits the theme, has a deity vibe to it and the angle is brilliant. Bravo!
Pixeltuner: I love the colors and the concept, I would put a lot more space between the watering can and the earth, they just seem too close to each other and that would allow you to add some nice water effects to it. Also, moving the hand with the earth closer to her womb would push the theme further.
Here's my last WIP and final:

fdisk > I really like the rendition, but the work itself has a few problems.
What bothers me most is the leg spread, legs just don't do that, especially for pregnant (or just full) women.
Regarding the doves, they're just to evenly spaced and have forms too similar to each other, creating a visual ladder. Try to avoid it in your next pieces, as it breaks off any flow or movement the piece might have had.
The top dove, as well as that corner vine make a tangent with the frame -- a bad thing to have in general. Give them some space or mute the values/hues.
Quinn Simoes, I understand if I'm mistaken, I was just operating with the understanding that a character could be animal-based so long as it fit the brief and was representative of an individual rather than a species (e.g. Aslan).
This is where I am now, if it isn't following the right vein, just let me know and I'll hold back from posting a final. Either way I enjoyed this.

Well, I feel like I could just keep working on this to keep fixing small things here and there. But, I feel like I can only go so far with it at this point. The only thing I would really do with it is add her reflection in the water. I will take what I learned from making this one onto the next!
AriA I see your point, and I appreciate you clarifying that for me. If you can make it feel more like an individual character rather than a creature, I encourage you to do so.
Cheers,
Quinn
Nearly there =]

@Me, Myself, and Me Again - Very nice! Really digging the interaction of water/ earth and the foetus. You can do iiit!
