Hey Guys,

I've been painting for a few years now, but recently I've seem to hit a plateau, both motivation and skill wise. I've decided to start a sketchbook amongst other things, hopefully it'll motivate me to start churning out stuff daily again...

I'll be posting some of my previous stuff + any new doodles/sketches. Please feel free to critique on any areas so I can improve on those. Thanks!

Imo some of my main problems are concerning speed, anatomy(esp hands) and workflow. Hopefully I can improve on those, as now I tend to spend too much time fussing over 1 piece.

couple of env concepts for today..the first one was more of a doodle though. Didnt really like it.

Didnt update for the past few days... :s, here some stuff I did today + the days before


A visuals test for an indie game me and a couple of friends are working on--



An env of some orge dwellings, this took me around 5.5 hrs ( yeah I really need to streamline my workflow)

Well the fastest way to work past that plateau is tons and tons of studies. I think it might be a good decision to work on traditional medium as well, perhaps fill a sketch page a day? You will probably work a lot faster if you, as I said before, start doing tons of studies rather than finished drawings that way your mind will be constantly exercised on the main points before tedious refinement. gestures, life drawing, quick observational drawing, quick perspective studies and many other things are good ways to grind your skills to a higher level.

First off, sorry for the late reply-- was kinda off the past few days being busy with stuff. Yeah, that's a good idea, thanks for the suggestion. I actually have the same book that you have, Michael Hampton's Figure Drawing. :] Tried to get into his system, but couldn't really get into it for some reason. Now I try to re-read a few pages everyday. I also have pdfs of bridgman, hogath and loomis--they are collecting digital dust though. :|

I should probably stick to a more disciplined daily routine, lol

A gesture warmup I did today--no ref, was trying to construct some figures.


My hand anatomy is particularly rusty.....gonna work on that. ...

These are some concepts for stages in the game (it's a 2.5D sidescroller bounty-hunting game). The actual camera will be much closer, something like the piece I posted before.

A fully rendered version of one of the panels from one of the pieces above...decided to remove the gate to the right as it doesnt really fit. Might refine further later.

Those two paintings in your second post with the caped guy fighting look nice. The 3D spaces feel really solid, perhaps because you nailed the shadows.
Last landscape in your latest post looks awesome, too. Nice lighting and colors.

+some 60 sec gestures with a cheap disposable type ballpoint today. I like using these more than costlier pens, they feel very sketchy and rough.

nice enviros! they are really well composed and designed. my only crit would be to keep painting out the linework cuz they are sometimes distracting. your lighting, colors, and ideas are quite nice otherwise. keep at it!

Thanks for the input, really appreciate it. Usually when I start with linework 1st I tend not to paint over the lines so as to save time (dont have to redefine stuff). But I do see where you're coming from. Nowadays I'm starting to just work from painted thumbnails 1st...


Some stuff today, plus some animation I'm starting on...its been quite a long while since I've touched animation, but its kinda fun.

Well, haven't been uploading stuff for a while, mostly been busy testing animation nowadays...

heres some 15 min gesture speedpaints, 30 sec pen gestures, and a doodle. Will try to upload more often in the future.

Hey Rusty! Mate your environments look amazing! I can see you are already doing speedpaints for improving your workflow, so just keep on doing them because that's certainly helpful! Also might help you to use some custom made brushes, they will improve your quality and your speed! Since you already do fine with the basic brush, might be a good idea for you to step up! (I can see you already use some for the tree foliage, so I apologize in advance for the tip if you already using them a lot ). I can see that your figure drawings fall a little bit behind in skill but it's OK! It might help you to do speedpaints of parts of the subject instead of the whole, that way you can focus more on the edges and the definition, which is also good for the workflow imho.

Thanks for the input! yeah, I'm now exploring more of custom brushes too. I do use them, but for that project I tried not to as there are 2 artists (inc me) and we needed to keep the rendering consistent..

Some env piece for today----its actually for a practice group on DA. Something about arid savannahs and wildlife. I exercised some artistic license and added impending storm clouds to up the dramatic-ness of it.
