Journey of a beginner to became a good artist!

Hello to everyone!
First I want to apologize for my english... I'm from Italy. so be patient please...
My name is Luca, and I found this great site for artists some days ago. I got the University degree in Interior Design last monday, November 26, and from some months I "entered" the world of 3D art, specifically my passion it's environment/level design.
It's about 2 years that my hand is not seriously involved in a drawing. I know that for being a good 3D artist you have to know the world around you through drawing: from anatomy to perspective to chiaroscuro, color technics, photography, etc.
In the past I wasn't so firm in drawing, and now that I've finished the University I want to dedicate myself in studing artistic technics. At least till I became a good drawer.
I saw a post from another member that gave me the idea to post every day, or almost everyday, my sketches. Thanks MindCandyMan!
This way I want to focus on what I do and receive some advice from who's better than me.

I will begin with this sketches. I started to study the book of Betty Edwards "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain", and I'm doing the exercises that she recommend. I do those drawings in 3 days. I'm trying to do my best and see what come out at the end of the lessons.
I know that some are ugly, but I want to post everything I do as a sort of diary.

Great start and welcome to CA! It's always great to find someone starting out fresh and ready to learn and you look like you're going at the right pace. Eventually you'll want to start tackling the basic fundamentals which will first and foremost include a LOT of perspective drawing. For now though I'd take some time to get loosen up and enjoy just drawing, post a bunch of stuff on here so that we can all get a feel for where you are. Keep posting and have fun while you're here.

Thank you for welcome MrFrenik. I saw your sketchbook. Really good works! Indeed I know that perspective is important. I wanted to follow the book of Betty Edwards first, to see if my drawing really improve. But I found even Andrew Loomis books, that explain perspective really good. Next days I will post some sketch with study of perspective.
Meanwhile I did another self portrait. Here you go. That's for the day.

Hey, thanks for checking my stuff out. Another good book to check out for figure drawing is Michael Hampton's Figure Drawing : Design and Invention. Really helped me to understand the form and structure to drawing the figure.

Ooo cool to see you starting this whole thing! If you follow those books you mentioned earlier you can't go wrong, especially with Loomis, Bridgman and Schmid. I probably went through each each of those books at least three times completely and learned something new each time. I would also really recommend the books of James Gurney, especially "Color and Light" if you don't already have it. Cant wait to see more!

Hey there! Looking promising, just dont give up, you need to work more, around 4-5 hour/day and i recommend to make as many line drawings you can. this way you can create an good understanding of forms and a better hand. Its all about practicing now, lots of drawing. Good luck!

Thanks llex_paul for your support and advice. I'm spending about all the morning and much of evening for this sketchbook. But I lose time studing and looking for manuals. Now that I found it all is assured that I'll spend much more time in drawings. I'll follow your suggestion and try to concentrate on lines and forms before pouncing on lights and shadows.

Great start mate . I will not give any critique now, the most important part now is to show yourself and us that you will keep up. Although you are already doing some nice lines and stuff so you will improve fast if you keep up the basic studies. Keep up anatomy and basic forms. lets both keep up

loving the dedication that is the most important thing to have, you are deffinetly studying the right things, grind on that perspective, do you do warm ups? i recommend you to since you are starting to get your hand nice and loose before starting a drawing session, keep working on those forms, i know its boring as fuck, but what i did was, i only allowed myself to draw fun stuff AFTER i drew a minimum of 5 pages of practice stuff (anatomy, perspective, geoforms) hope to see alot more from you dont give up!

This morning: perspective study.

Here I tried to study this scene present in the Loomis book "Successful Drawing"
I'm not sure about the roof of the house. There's some different process to find the various height of the characters and the house and I don't know if it's everything allright. I hope it is, I studied this drawing about 4 hours...
Anyway if there's something wrong I'll adjust it. Let me know if you can.


Even that was a challenge, and I can't say I really understood this process of several horizons. Loomis book here too, the same as above.
Looking at it don't seem so bad, but I will examine in depth the argument. Even here any advice are welcome.

dont worry if you dont FULLY understand it yet, if you managed to see what principles and methods loomis applied in the picture that its fine, you can come back to i say you Nailed the perfectly, do more of theese, try doing a grid and mashing alot of figures from head in there, doesnt matter if it sucks or not this is for yourself so YOU can see what is lacking in your working kowledge of perspective (and also of the figure) keep it up man you are doing really good!

Hey mr thanks for stopping by my sketchbook. You have made a nice start here tackling the basics. Do lots and lots of drawing from life even if its just a spoon or a piece of paper. Longer render studies too to work on values and really give yourself the chance to study and analyse light and dark. You have good skills with the pencil and your proportions are not bad too. Watch portraits you have an tendency to exaggerate eyes size, also try and really look at the shape of the feature your drawing. I think some anatomy studies and construction studies will really help your figure work.You are moving in the right direction and doing well all these other things will just help move your work to another level. Keep having fun I will be back.
