    Desert landscape

    Long time no post guys

Basically I'm doing this painting for visualisation of our idea for Unreal Challenge project.

I'd say I'm about a third way to finishing this one up, and I could really use some pointers. Not entirely sure why but I can't seem to get it to look like I want it to. Is it a bit too bare? Is something wrong with the way I'm rendering things or the perspective? It looked great in the thumbnail :/

    Any help is appreciated.

It does look a bit bare. You could add some mystical carvings in the pillars. Maybe break the ground in the middle a bit more (with parts going up and down). The thing I don't get is why are parts of the mountain up in the air. Was it an explosion? a beam from a UFO? they just float around? You could add some more clues to make it easier to understand.
There could be some stuff in the background far away as well.

No, you're just not done yet. I would not say this is 1/3 of the way done.

It's a bit sketchy to tell exactly where your horizon line is, but yes, I believe there is an issue with the perspective:

This should be a very simple piece. All you really need to know is how to render a basic box.

I did a bit of work on it. Thanks very much for the analysis Corlan. It was amazing and extremely helpful. I used your image as reference and pulled some more of my own. Found out a lot about the composition of sandstone!

I'll work more on it tomorrow, but here's the updated version.

Lighting in the forground (where the guy is) isn't right.

In all fairness, that comment was fairly useless. What isn't right about it?

The shadows on the man need to be a lot darker. Also they should follow his form - he's not meant to be a cut out. I'd make the lighting, especially the sky a lot more dramatic because atm the whole thing is sort of placid like he might as well be watching a cow chewing cud.
