E.O.W Round #199: In the Dead of Winter

E.O.W Round #199: In the Dead of Winter

TOPIC = In the dead of winter

    Brief:

This is an open topic. Think about the atmosphere of your piece and how cold it should look being that it takes place in the most severely freezing part of winter, wherever it is. This is also all up to interpretation too because the phrase "dead of winter" can be many things, not just literal. The 200th EOW activity will be shortly after the due date for this one, so be on the lookout for that! This section has come a long way, indeed.

    Deadline: 20 November

    Tuner people, not Turner.

I'm not sure what to do just yet, but, i've always liked the atmosphere in these paintings (John Atkinson Grimshaw), very wintery and bleak. I look forward to seeing what everybody does.

What about Turner?...he created some incredible storm-winterly landscapes, full of movement and power...

PixelTuner : liking your colours , very interesting framing going on in your shot.

marko markovic : "...and so approaches the mountain range in the dead of winter..."

Dayle : nice share, i like how much gloom is generated by the green and blue colours.

artiphats : Very nice start! i think the right side is going to give you trouble

I was reminded of this painting "The Road of the War Prisoners" by Vasili Vereshchagin when I saw this EOW topic.

    Second WIP.

I think I'll start overlaying a bit of color, blues and browns. But there is also the chance I might stay in just grays for this one. Either way, still working...

Pixeltuner: I really like it, it gets me thinking of a plot.

Marko: Can't wait to see what you're going to do with it.

Artiphats: It looks good. Maybe you should take the focus away from the animals though because the deer seems to be the main focus and not the environment.

Adrian: Love the variety of structures in your piece.

I pushed the original sketch and it feels finished. It got me thinking towards the right direction but it won't be my final. Here it is anyways, i will begin a new sketch.

Nestoronfire, you are absolutely correct about the animals, it's most problematic with the deer. As an illustration /painting though, I really like how it is coming along. So for the challenge I may try a totally different idea, but who knows there is still plenty of time. Thanks for commenting

Pixel y u no finish? where is the finish? yyyyyy. But seriously, great start!

marko markovic: I think you can move the city a little more up in the composition. Like, pretend you zoom out of the angle you have now. Right now it just looks cropped from a larger image.

takashmen: that's a really cool alchemy sketch! can't wait to see the colours!

artiphats: if it's the dead of winter.. why is the deer alive? Also those trees. :megusta:

nestoronfire: dat face. is like golbb golbb golbb~~ mmm snow~~ Anyways, I like the view of the mountainside. I hope that stays in your new sketch D:

howie: I'm not sure if it's just me, or does the human seem to be ginormous compared to the pipeline and the blimp?

Okay my coloured thumbs. Leaning more on the left broken-tree gate piece, though that bottom one strikes a chord in me. Cold river and broken trees. Idk what I was doing on the piece on the right-- wanted a spider web forest with its victims hanging off of the trees. kekekeke.

hekatoncheir: liking your colours a lot! first and third comps are awesome, hard to pick a winner out of those two.

Nestoronfire: you could expand it? make that cave the focus, even make the lighting more moodeee

artiphats: maybe reduce the size of the animals to detract focus from them??

takashmen: liking the potential architecture brainstorm madness!!!

0Hayes: you've got a story in there so that's great,

marko markovic: starting to look epic WOW! i smell war!!!!!!!!!

MasterTroglodyte: i like the atmosphere and your pic has a silence to it almost serene in nature, thinking off adding flying space ships to??

Howie: sweet colors and simplicity, lighting is so good!!!

Hi everybody! I'm not sure I have the necessary skills to finish something from my mind yet but I wanted to enter the EOW for some time now... so I'll start with this one.

I did a quick block-out of the scene I had in mind in 3dsmax and adjusted there the camera/perspective/composition to make it easier to work on. I tried to get a spiral/elipse kind of composition and I also wanted the frozen hand on a white contrasting background. I'm not sure I took the dead of winter theme to literal though...
Anyway, here's what I did in 3dsmax and the paintover from Photoshop

    Name: DeadWinter_01.jpg
Views: 841
Size: 251.3 KB

There's a dead body in the frozen river with his arm out holding a heckles medallion thing and two cops are coming down towards the body. One of them slips into the river breaking the ice.

@AdrianNagorski, hekatoncheir thanks guys for feedback

Adrian: i think you should simplify your design, too much is going on, choose one sculpture and multiply it, also think more about perspective , the statue in middleground can't be smaller then in background
hekatoncheir: cool atmosphere and color choice, atm first one looks the best, but on the other hand i like the idea of spider web, maybe try to merge this two things
Howie: for me it's too tighten up, maybe if you focus more on the ship/structure? in bg and show victims? dunno
andrei313: interesting idea, keep those edges clean, and look for some references(hand, cops)
Nestoronfire: maybe don't resign of all elements, the rock mouth seems nice -> change perspective, make up story, give it wider shot -> it will be easier to start when you have sth done already

    cheers

    hekatoncheir,

The idea was that it was about to be killed, as opposed to already dead. In any case I'm looking at all the great feedback from you guys and making changes. Thanks!

I'm loving the ideas so far, especially hekatoncheir'.

iIve done two roughs so far, may do two more and see which one i'd like to work on. I like them both at the moment but still not sure what one to develop.

Nawh. I was picturing a place where the brave crew of an exploring vessel or smuggling ship comes to salvage or rescue but finds an abandoned derelict facility with some horrid monstrosity, some dire plague. At most I was thinking of putting something like flying fowl...
