Hmmm... not sure if there is a colossus of nuclear disasters or not. Hopefully I can finish this on time.

Hey Guys this is my first post ever!!! here on conceptart.org..I hope to keep them coming. Here is my progress on the colossus. My Character rules the sea and is the reason behind Tsunamis. He uses his gian trident with a giant pearl at the bottom to pound into the ocean and create the huge waves.

Also keep in mind that this isn't to design one of the "Titans" from Greek mythology.
@Nickybeats: on top of what I already mentioned, I would try to narrow down your colossus to be more specific. "Mother nature" is ALL natural things grouped together into a general term.
@MisterE: Looks good, but a nuclear disaster is not natural. Try thinking of things that aren't cause by man. If you wish to qualify for the poll you gotta follow the brief
@3mK: I like all those smoke effects you got going on there. Is that a brush or you using special filter combinations?
@G@m: As usual, great stuff! I really like the choice you went with!
@ArtbyAntB: Awesome idea, and great start!
Here are a couple more ideas I came up with. I think I'm going to go with a deep sea colossus. I think I'm going to refine the B/W one and go with him. When he becomes enraged he creates the riptides and maelstroms which consume anything in its path.

Work in progressThe background is based off a photograph by C. Newhall (public domain)...
I hope I can pull off the humongous scale of that thing, I'll have to spend some time on the fore- and midground to establish and really push that sense of scale ...

Here's an idea... Colossus of Earth / Nature. I'd like to be able to use natural textures of wood, stone and metal in the design to emphasis skin, muscle and bone. Looking good so far everybody... I wish I had the idea that they did in Thor, that destroyer is freaking gorgeous!
Hello mates!!!Thats a great topic and great entries so far.
Ok i have to go to sleep now but tommorow i will feedback everyones work.
Here what i did so far, i still want to work and play with some things.
So here comes, TSUNAMI
good night

pld: Kingkostas, that is awesome!
yea i see what you mean. i know the design is completely absent from this wip, i was mostly trying to get the overall look and feel of what i wanted, i was planning on totally redoing her though because everytime i looked back in this thread it was bugging me. but im gonna go get on that! thanks a ton havok and humboldt!!!

kingkostas, yep, that is awesome!
Some more progress on the walking glacier. Just realized that he definitely needs more rage and menace.
Some very promising wips here so far!
Im not sure if wood is a raging element. But my concept is along the lines of when humans go extinct, nature takes over and civilization gets overgrown by nature. So that's that. Not sure how to go about painting small trees and forest vistas. Will have to do some studies.
Here's my line work for this challenge. It looks like he's gonna be a fire colossus. I'm worried if the sense of grandeur is expressed enough in this design. I figured giving him bigger hands and feet would do the trick, but I might need more.

Hello all, thanks for the comments mates.
Well as i promised here i will offer feedback. Although i cant use any more time for more feedback, have to go do some work.
I hope everyone can find useful information in these paintovers. This is a great chow and there are interesting works so far.
Lets all keep up becoming better and better.
mastertroglodyte-Great start, [paintover]
havokReed-Interesting design mate [paintover]
alekson-Really like the shapes, keep it up!!! I cant offer
that much feedback yet, but i like very much your
characters shape, although i am not sure about the
animalistic looking overall mood. This is gonna be great,
just find a way to make it more human[a human head can make
a difference] [its common that we find a dirt in the wall
and we make up a face hahahaah]
nickybeats-Yo mate, lets see[paintover]
gunsing-Lets see[paintover]
fdisk- Hello mate, lets see [paintover]
Hyunjae-Hello mate, nice ideas so far, i dont have a lot
info to offer more in depth feedback but you can check the
other paintovers and get something from there. Just make
sure everything has a reason to exist.
pixeltuner- Yo mate great work on the material!!! Yep only
thing i would mention is the Raging aspect. Dont forget to
enchance the scale . Nice play in the edges, try not to
scatter your light fully.
3mk-hello mate, lets see [paintover] [sorry i picked your
earlier sketch]
breistift- yo mate, lets see [paintover]
G@m-Mate i already like your work very much. Nice
composition play. Cant wait to see it further developed.
Sillirien-Love these shapes, awesome!!!!I agree with gam,
try to make it more readable even if you are bored to
change pose etc try to make a lighting contition that will
help make it more readable.I dont have any more feedback,
just keep defining. Maybe would need to be more dynamic for
the raging aspect but you can do that with some atmospheric
effects, also try to show scale maybe with the small scale
of the texture of the surroundings.
MisterE-hello mate, did a paintover [paintover]
ArtbyAntB-Yo mate seems like we chose the same theme.
You sketch is really awesome and it has very nice rythm,
the equipment is great and i would love to see how it will
developt!!!i am loving it so far
Mbyle-Hello man, very interesting design.you can achieve
lovely scale with that one. I love the big pose you already
have.Only thing is that i dont know how close to a humanoid
it is. Keep up the great work, lovely lines.
Sanjo- Hey mate, this is looking really great. Love the
scale so far. Check the anatomy a little and take good care
of the values, great potential.i will not paintover
anything, just keep up refining and lead the eye where you
want to. And get rid of anything that you dont need.
Dayle-hello mate, did a paintover [paintover]
also i would like to post these in my sketchbook so maybe someone else could also benefit from them

small crit for you kingcostas - i think if you put the hand back into the waves, it would make the image more powerful. like he has overly long sleeves of water that he is about to smack together. the hand sticking out like that disrupts the composition to a degree and seems rather weak in contrast to the rest of his pose. it makes it look as if he's struggling with the waves instead of commanding them.

Always think about:
lighting! design! perspective! proportion!
And (self)motivation is still everything.
MisterE - You've chosen an awesome element! It might be nice if you dehumanize him a little bit. For a nuclear elemental he resembles a human being so much!
ArtbyAntB - Cool sketchHe looks majestic and it would be nice if he interacted with the water around him.
Mbyle - Like that concept and the biggest sketch is the best one. It would be interesting to see what you're going to do with his legs.
Havok Reed - Yeah, that deep sea elemental is definitely scary. Don't really know what's going on with his arms. It might be helpful to make a cleaner sketch and make clear (also for yourself) what exactly he consists of. (before you start a final painting)
Sanjo - Ahhh! That is so cool! A volcanic elemental that is part of the smoke. I wish I had thought of thatThe composition of your painting is a little bit dull however. Maybe bring in some lines of action (add lines of bursted earth, flying debris) or even change up the framing or perspective!
Dayle - Yeah I like your concept. Just be careful in adding metal (like you mentioned) because that might contradict the fact that he's an earth elemental. Play around with the framing of your guy and how he interacts with his environment.
kingkostas - I'm a big fan of your works! (bookmarked your blog a week ago) This one is amazingThere's one small thing: I like progress-shot number 2, because it has a little bit less blacks underneath the waves. The black sucks up all the movement, whilst little curves and twirles could give a subtle indication of the movement/sucking/teeth of this beast.
breistift - Yeah he looks nice. Could add a little more menace, but I like where this is goingThe icy bit around his crotch looks a little bit... eh.. dodgy
panama66 - Fun stuff, curious to see more detail (leaves and more wooden elements) after your studies.
Here are some fast thumbs/sketches of my earth/rock gorilla-like elemental before I go digital. If anyone has any crits/feedback it would be more than welcome![]()
@kingkostas: Wow! Awesome critique my friend! I really appreciate the amount of detail you put into it, not only for myself but for everyone else too! That's a lot of time to spend on all of that, so you sir get a mega thumbs up!(Also, the fart analogy was good. If all things could be explained in a fart analogy, life would be simple.)
@lewis: lol I didnt put much thought into it, especially the arms, which are tentacle things at the moment
The first one (water guy) was just to get a basic idea down before I went into thumbnails to finish it. The second water guy I really liked, because I put more thought and reference research in to. But I think I will revisit the first water guy and put more thought into him.

@Havok Reed: it's brush, great for smoke, and fire, don't use it often.
@kingkostas: Wow man thanks for that great crit and help! I do have problems with sketching, like to push things in the start, and go detailing as soon as I can. :/ You helped me a lot, I'll try in the future to work more on starting ideas. By the way, if you have some free time finish this wind-elemental-colossus that you did, it sooooo gooood!
I'll try to fix my windy thingy, don't have time to start a new one.

kingkostas, you're the man! The paintover was very helpful, as you can see from this update. Thanks for helping!
A lot of work still to be done.
@mastertroglodyte I like how its coming together...Keep trucking
@kingkosta Ha ha yeah we did!..Awesome feedback man!!
This is turning into an epic thread! Love the designs you guys are coming up with!
Hi guys, first time entering chow, liking the kingkostas tsunami guy so far. Here's a wip for my earth elemental, who ain't need no humans in its jungle.
![]()
Hmm.. I've been sketching out some ideas for an 'economic collapse' colossus, but I'm beginning to think I'm straying to far from the brief, as it's not natural or elemental.
Changed the design and scaled him down a bit. Still a lot more work to go.
KingKostas - your really a great person you know that? that is a really big undertaking doing all those critiques and paintovers!! very much appreciate you taking the time for that! you have just resparked my interest in this challenge, so thanks man, really!

Alot of really great work so far! Started painting on mine, I chose my first sketch because the other ones was a bit too creature-like.

Kingkostas - Thanks for the heads up, may have gotten a bit carried away with my initial design and lost the humanoid element. Also, heck of a job doing all those paint-overs. Incredible.
I'll keep updating because I'm having some fun with it, but not sure if this falls out of the Character of the Week guidelines now.
Alexson - Great start man, loving the textures you already have dropping in throughout.
Najtkriss - Stellar. Love the motion, very dynamic.
Breistift - Nice job making the adjustment to your initial concept. Enjoying the hulking element you added to your character. Looking forward to you next update.
