CHOW #307 - Raging Elemental Colossus

I would first like to say hello to everyone as one of the new ChoW mods, also with Quinn Simoes. We also want to extend another thank you Eofn for giving us this opportunity to be more involved with all the great artists on this forum! We hope to be able to spark your imagination and inspire you with the topics we come up with!

We also want to bring up some minor changes to the rules for qualifying for the poll at the end of each week. As part of designing your character, we would also like to see the works in progress. Post at least 2 WIPS in the topic thread and the same 2 WIPS when you post your final. We encourage you, but not required, to also post thumbnails and share your thoughts and directions of a piece.

Also, when submitting your final image, be sure to keep the name in the format we have been using, (USERNAME_CHOW#XXX)

Now that we got all the technical mumbo jumbo out of the way, let the new rounds of ChoW commence!!!

    RAGING ELEMENTAL COLOSSUS
    Deadline - Sunday, November 25. 10PM GMT

Natural disasters happen for a reason. Deep in the world, there exists powerful, colossal, beings which bring about the destructive forces of these disasters. Since the beginning of time, the earth has always been a battle ground for the elements. The disasters occur when the colossus are fighting each other. For example, an earthquake occurs when an earth colossal is fighting another or a tornado appears from a wind colossus.

Your goal is to pick an element that ties into a natural disaster and design a colossus based on your choice. Avoid "going animal" with it to keep it to a unique character design.

    The Guidelines:
    • Can be any gender (If you decide to give it one)
    • Don't make it an animal. (Don't make a giant bird and call it good. You may use features of animals)
    • Try to indicate the type of element the colossus is within its design

    THE RULES
    • In addition to the brief, if you do not follow these rules, you will not be included in the poll.
    • Files must be named: CHoW#301_Username
(Files with any other names such as final.jpg or even chow301final.jpg will not be accepted)
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread BEFORE the deadline
    • Follow the brief!

Awesome! Hope I actually manage to submit something to finals this time. Probably won't have time to work around Thanksgiving though...

Just to make sure, are we limited to the 4 standard elements, or can we incorporate any 'element' as long as we can tie it to a natural phenomenon? Was thinking of something like a star/space colossus that causes meteor showers.

Although an Armageddon would technically be a "natural disaster," we want to keep it as something that happens on earth its self. BUT you are not limited to just the 4 elements of water, fire, earth, wind. You can go into things like ice or lightning. Or try thinking out of the box, like what would cause a famine; rot and mold destroys crops. Mold is a factor of moisture and heat. You could make a disgusting, rot, colossus. I hope that make sense.

I'm willing to bet that it was causing too little submissions to finals thread. Though I like the idea, but to flesh out a nice character design with a character sheet and a nice illustration in a week was a bit much.

The Character sheet is no longer required for entry into the poll. Havok Reed and I felt that the character sheet was given a fair run, and the general consensus among CHoW participants was that it was too much to fit into a weekly challenge. We want everyone to take part in CHoW and have a solid Character Design by the end of the week for entry into the poll, so hopefully this decision will encourage that.

We have brought back the wips requirement but otherwise the rules are generally the same as before.

If you guys have anymore questions don't hesitate to ask either Havok or myself.

Looking forward to seeing everyone's designs!

    Quinn

lol thanks Pixel, we'll fix it!

@MasterTroglodyte: He makes mud slides! Those are pretty devastating.

Just a quick silhouette, to get an idea down. I might try for water on my next one.

Welcome, new mods. Hopefully removal of the character sheet stipulation will bring a lot of people back to Chow.

On another note, I'm finding it very hard to resist making a comment along the lines of 'There is a Raging Elemental Colossus in my pants.'

I can't help but wonder if you would consider electricity to be part of the elements. I myself would, as in lightning. Or are we just to stick at earth, wind, water, fire? I would like to try and give this a shot. I don't take part in many of the weekly activities....

Hey guys, long time no see, here's what I've got so far. A Lava Elemental (Volcano disasters) a water elemental (ice storms and hurricanes) and a fire elemental (Forest fires).

I have to also say that I love the new rules. I pretty much had to stop participating in CHOW because I just didn't have the time to do thumbnails, full renders, and turnarounds. I'm glad that the rules have been relaxed once more to final images and optional thumbnails. I also like the rule of having to post in the WIP thread even if I won't always have time for it.

Stone/rock/ore elemental thingie. Started with a couple of 'boulder-brushes' I made and went from there. Probably needs more dynamics and rage.

havok reed: your guy seems quite stiff in the shoulder / arms area, or maybe he's missing a neck D:
alexson: interesting idea, the third one is quite cute with all the birds and it has a nice sense of scale. The only thing i dislike its that atm its shape is quite circular, but im sure that with render and sharp edges here and there it would look awesome.
NickyBeats: nice sense of movement! her anatomy on the other hand is a bit all over the place, especially how that left leg is attached to the pelvis, also those tits o_o get rid of the silicone plz!
gunsing: the background atm attract the eye way more then your dude, are you sure you want such bright saturated blues in a picture with a flaming guy?
MasterTroglodyte: you guy looks pissed o_o maybe because he doesn't know yet what he's supposed to be those shoulder pieces atm look quite out of place, if you are going for mud maybe you could shape those out of various debris?
Hyunjae: interesting sketch, maybe some content to show how big he's supposed to be? atm it looks like a midget and doesn't feel titanish at all
pixeltuner: as quick as ever, sooner or later ill be as fast as you with those sketches D: only crit atm is that his general shape is quite plain (human with bumps) , i like the face tho
breistift: the lich kings is back! naked!

I've wanted to make some kind of creature made of clouds for quite a while now so this is the perfect opportunity! i think it would be quite nice to see the modern army battling against one titans, so here are my very rough and messy thumbnails.

Great stuff so far by everyone! I just want to make a quick clarification on one of the guidelines. I mentioned to avoid "animalistic" features, but what is really meant is to avoid going full animal with it. So you CAN use features like, if you want to give it wings or a beak or something, that is fine. Just don't go and make a giant bird that represents a wind colossus and call it good. So far everyone is going with a golem or beast like which is great! Can't wait to see finished products!

NickyBeats: Gia is usually depicted as a fertility goddess, but that's not really coming through here - the only thing that says fertility are her dis-proportionately large breasts. She actually looks a bit scrawny. I'd say increase the size of her hips, thighs and midsection, go for more of a luchadora\weight lifter type build.
Here's a piece by Anselm Feuerbach of gaia that shows what I mean

You can see the fertility in the design, but she's also built like a brick shithouse and could kick some ass (check out those forearms!).
There's also not much about the design so far that says "gaia" rather than just "naked woman".
