A lot of you guys are giving your creatures legs that seem a bit too capable of locomotion. Remember, the creature should be incapable of moving or only capable of minimal movement.

The Vangaurd. HIve protector of the Seed.
A plant based "scorpion like" creature that fires splinters out of his tail.
Gonna take a stab at this. Thinking it spits from its mouth, then starts firing the eggs from under its belly in a last ditch effort when cornered or dying. Not sure where to go with this aesthetically... I feel like I'm way over-thinking this.

AlexaRossi & marcoferrigno - Thanks! As for the brand I just use Blick prismacolor imitations, the ones with a chisel tip on one side and a fine point on the other
Really need to do some serious drawing on paper... started doing a weekly drinking and oil painting session on friday nights with the homies which im hoping will encourage me to start sketching again.
fat sack of crap that laborously scuttles along with its tinys legs as it belches noxious and corrosive spores into the air, decomposing corpses are harvested by the tiny tentacles beneath the main body.

It's been a while I think
while I never had a problem with the illustrative approaches on the COWs I kinda like it that we are forced to do some real concept art this time
on the sketches so far: I think some are too much focusing on how the spitter is actually spitting
I think the main challenge will be the four variations
here my first idea on some rockworm spitter thing
while you could argue that this thing can move underground it is stationary when it emerges

Looking really cool so far everyone! as Si-Swe said, a lot of you design creatures with legs that properly hold the creature's weight. Keep its limited movement in mind! (or inability to move)
Nickybeats, I'm loving that design!
edit, added some sketches. Not feeling 'it' yet, but I'm having fun so keeping an open mind about what'll happen. Some kind of reptile shooting spikes, and a laserbeam pig-thing.

hiya, i'm participating for the first time, the spitter is a stationary dude in some planet in whatnot galaxy and spits some organic, acid like matter that glows like swamp gas and is highly toxic.

HI there guys! Some good stuff thereheres my idea more worked:
I was thinking about the idea of doing something like spitters of meat, let me explain, my creatures will be walking slowly in the battlefield and they will be eating with the mouth the corpses in the ground, then they will digest it and finally will be ejected by some bio-cannons. What do you think about that?
So good luck and have fun everyone, bye!!!
Ricardo Padierne Silvera.
sounds so sexy it turns me on... gud idea, theres potential for something disgusting there we all need to remember the restricted movement thing myself included.
Drunken 2:00AM brainstorming. I'm going to bed.

Hi guys.
Good things comin' up. It's cool to see such various ideas.
Here's my contribution.
The overall idea, is a insect/arachnoid like creature, that cannot really move, except from rotation on itself.
Being unable to dodge attack, it needs some real protection. So I came up with those heavy claws/arms, wutever, that it could use as a shield when not firing. Splitting expose its weak points.

I had the idea of a ceiling hanging spitter. Some sort of hybrid between plant and animal since the creature is meant to remain basically stationary, hopefully this fits the brief OK, anyway here are some ideas I've been playing with.

Heres my first WIP. Like Sevira, my concept is a worm-like creature that is stationary when it surfaces. So when the player has gotten relatively in range it will pop out of the ground, walls, or ceiling and spit explosive plasma/acidic venom projectiles at the player. Basically I visualise it acting sort of like a long range type that you usually encounter in various action games.

heres my second WIP I've cleaned up the line work and my next step will be to paint it. I hope that the variations are not too different, that it would violate the brief requirement. please let me know of what you think of it so far and what I might do to improve it

Thought I would do this cow, needed the practice designing creatures. anyways so here is mine
might do some more variations later
Ello! It's been a little while, don't know if I'll be able to push this to finish but I did a few quick concepts anyways...
1-was thinking some kind of a termite queen slug thingy, spits acid...felt like drawing an army slug A) and worker slug B) to go with the queen, guess I kinda got a little carried away, haha
2-haven't a clue what to make of this one, just came out
3-purely immobile plant-like creature, draws in dirt and whatever else from underground and absorbs nutrients, also uses dirt as projectiles when threatened

Two more concepts.. quick question; are we to design 4 completely different concepts for the topic, like I've done here (the two earlier one's included) or have one design, and subtle changes, more like the concept sheet you attached earlier to the thread ?
I'm still not getting the 'spitter' in all of this. None of these designs have it. I think I'll have to re-think my approach a bit.
Figured I'd contribute. Always enjoy the line drawing.

@Tirwa: Great! Very nice work, although I'll admit I'm not sure about the spitting aspect.
Here's a quick grayscale and color study.

Scourge: The creature on the far left takes the cake out of this batch! very cool asymmetrical design, variety in the forms and details is interesting, and my favorite palette of the 4
Electrix: that bubbly critter that's anchored to the ground caught my eye. Might just be the nice wet rendering, but that one looks promising!
Ricardops: That's the one to beat! crazy
Tirwa: cool idea, very different orientation from the rest; it's like a big ole bloated wasp that's too heavy to move.
Can't wait for the finals everyone!!
DefiledVisions - Either is acceptable. Don't get too caught up in the "spit" aspect. As long as it's an organic projectile, it should be fine.
You guys are killing it! Keep it up!

Heres my third WIP, still got a ways to go. The next step for me is to incorporate more hue and therefore more texture into it. This part will be tricky since I still don't have that much digital art experience. So my best bet will be to experiment until I get it right. If anyone has any suggestions or techniques to do this, that they would like to share, then please let me know. I really want to push my art to a more professional level.

I just noticed that my posted WIP seems a little fuzzy compared to the original file. Does anyone know how to fix that? I'm doing my work in Corel Painter 11 and I save a copy as a jpg, which I use to post.
Well, with work and the holidays, I won't be able to meet the deadline for this, but I'll still drop my latest WIP here for the heck of it. I did plan on doing 3 more variations. Anyhow, critiques welcome... this is one of species of a cave-dwelling creature that I like to call a Rock Viper. They all have a central, snake-like main body, and very keen eyes used to low light. When they spot prey, this species launches toxic "spores" at the player to incapacitate them. When stunned, the rock viper's main body lashes out and impales the victim with it's fangs, injecting digestive enzymes to slowly consume them.

Tirwa, nice rendering on the colored one!
Scorge, good to see you. Looking forward to see what you're bringing to the table. Concepts so far looking great!
Chose one of the first concepts and did some creatures based on its general design; Elongated body and reptilian beak-jaw. I've decided I like the original one and these additional designs so they're the one's I'll work with.
Almost done... went for a plant/animal hybrid instead of the alien/insect path.
