    ChOW#306 :: Teleport Tester

    Character of the Week #306
    Teleport Tester

    Create an unfortunate Teleport Tester!

DEADLINE: Sunday 18th NOVEMBER 9PM GMT
    Check your timezone!

Teleportation. Pretty much everyone wants to be able to do it and it always looks so cool in the movies, however you never see how they actually got to the teleporting phase. Therefore, this week we would like you to create a character who was unfortunate enough to be part of the early test phases of teleportation devices. We would like you to consider what might go wrong in a way that wouldn't kill the character, but be clear that previous tests hadn't been 100% successful.

    The Guidelines:
    • Can be any gender
    • Can be anystyle / genre
    • Must include the type of device they are testing (backpack / handheld/ pad)

    THE RULES
In addition to the brief, if you do not follow these rules, you will not be included in the poll.
    • Files must be named: CHoW#301_Username
(Files with any other names such as final.jpg or even chow301final.jpg will not be accepted)
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread BEFORE the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
    • At least 3/4 of the focus character must be visible
    • Follow the brief!

Just watch The Fly and you'll know what that testing phase looked like.. Pretty messy.

So my teleport tester dude will be the scientist who after finally succeeding in transporting organic matter, fruit and small animals, decides it's safe enough to test on a human. However due to both over confidence and wanting the glory of "first human teleport milestone" chooses to test it on himself. Everything would've gone okay too, if not for the unforseen flu virus he was carrying, which upon rematerialization had multiplied a billion times and coursed through his body causing excruciating pain.

Olek Patriskovjsk, the first human who succesfully teleported from one place to another. Succesful is a relative term as he lost his right arm and leg. Doctors rushed to save his life so Russia would have the first succesful teleportation in the world. Russian authorities say he is happy to have given up two limbs for his country. He is posing here with the original front mounted teleportation device.

The idea is to make kind of a classic sideshow portrait like this: http://www.missioncreep.com/mundie/gallery/lentini2.gif

    Great work guys.
@Pixel: Lol, I was thinking of something along the same lines there.
@G@m: crazy! makes me wonder how he is still alive...Just a suggestion, maybe you can throw in the other half of his body as being cybernetic like his arm and leg..or maybe show half of a cybernetic brain or something! [edit] G@m: lmao, I JUST noticed what was on his monitors! bahaha and the half rat.
@do9: I like the design on the arm, it reminds me of Portal!

nE0-ninja: Hey man, your dude is seriously messed up haha! I like the fact that you chose to portray him right 'in/after' the action; gives it nice drama. You mentioned that you're almost done, but I would say that it needs more refining Who are the figures in the background? In what new place has he been sent too? Those things are very unclear now, because you just didn't paint it yet! Also look up some photo ref of pieces of cloth and jumpsuits, just to see how the reflections and shadows work. His jumpsuit could use some work as well. Your piece would deserve it!
do9: I'm very curious to see the final version of this. His replacement leg seems a bit weird right now. Love the teleport device on him!
Dayle: I would like to see what exactly goes wrong during this teleportation (combustion, electrocution or anything else) and what makes him so scared. His expression is nicely portraited. Eager to see this guy in color.
G@M: Can't say anything but great design. He combines science with porn.. nice! How is he being able to function without half a brain though? (also don't forget the teleportation device, as was mentioned in the brief)
Pixeltuner: That is messy and pure horror haha. I like your take on the classic portrait. Is the thing in his hand the teleportation device?

    Here's my WIP, please critique!!
The private has a vision of his previous teleportation - where he lost both eyes.

In the final thing I'm gonna put more foreground for the device. I'm using a fractal program to generate special effects in the background.

Thinking kind of semi-cartoonish Einstein type of scientist whose neck elongates, here's a sketch (very much out of my comfort zone, I should really learn to draw people):

Lewis - Thanks for the comments. TBH I worked it up some more but it looked shit so kinda gave up. Might have another go but make it more interesting/less embarrassing!

I like the direction you've taken, the facial expression is great but the foreground pose doesn't really make it easy to understand what has happened? Could it maybe be a temporal teleporter, before and after shots? I like the lighting effects so far too.

Whiskey Sour - that is awesome, you are nuts (sorry), can you maybe play off the squirrels abit more? Did they interfere with the experiment, is that why this freak accident happen? Were there any side effects to the squirrels too?

Bummer that Fringe is coming to a close. I'm going to miss the wackyness and lens flares.

As I was doing this one, the one phrase that kept running through my head was "One does not simply Teleport without consequences" (insert Fellowship of the Ring pic)
Sure would be cool... but that first 1280 times would suck.

Amazing how science fiction keeps humans interested in obtaining the impossible.

    ^^ agreed.

Bnoch you never cease to amaze! i imagine you reading the CHOW topic, and then thinking about an image while sipping on some coffee in the morning, then you plant yourself in front of your cpu and slip into some painting trance, and you finish the image in like 2 hours flat. are you doing these in like one sitting? your hella fast. and your images are so damn interesting!! great focal work in this one man. love the grittiness.

breistift - I like the lighting effects, but maybe there should be some background lighting too? Seems a bit overpowering as it is, but I really think it's a good quality piece and cool idea.

This is as far as I am going, got a busy weekend. Was an interesting topic and some cool ideas, good luck all.

Some cool concepts this round, good topic.

I suspect Bnoch is a servant of the dark arts. How else could one conjure such mastery?
