    Conceptual Family Portrait

Alright, so I did this painting as something fun. I originally wanted to do a portrait of me, my girlfriend and our son, with our faces on a mural that you would see on the side of a van. My first thought was an Aztec style mural on a Mexi-minivan, but I found an image of this van with rims, and used it as the basis for the van in the painting. The basic structure was traced, and the surfaces rendered by looking at the image.
I had a hard time finding good reference for Aztec van murals, as they existed in my imagination, so I opted for a fantasy theme. I took two images of my son, one of my girlfriend, and one of me, and used them as the basis for the characters on the van. Now, I don't feel the image is finished, but I feel like it reads pretty good, and everything is where it should be. My colors feel alright, though they could be better. I really want to know if I'm on the right tack with this, or if it's a terrible piece. I got some pretty horrible reception to it when I presented it on some other online outfits. I want to make this image sell! What needs to be done?

Give my little boy a sword and shield and he turns into an instant little heathen; jumping off couches onto us waving his weaponry or chasing after the other neighborhood kids. I have a lot of fun wrestling with him Which leads me to the expression on your sons face. Right now it looks like he's trying to figure out who or what is in front of him (just like when I grew my beard and two of my kids couldn't tell who I was). I think trying out some different expressions that fit in with you and your girlfriends' may help out a bit.

BTW, is that grandpa conjuring some magic on the van door?

Thanks for the feedback, I'll try playing around with his expression some. The wizard on the door is actually another picture of him-from the 4th of July, playing with smoke bombs. It was too cool to not try and fit into this project, but I wanted him to look different, so I added the beard.
