Hi everyone, new user here! I wanted to share with you all my latest piece, a tribute portrait sculpture of one of my favorite science popularizers, Bill Nye! I hope you like and invite you to give any feedback you have
I started the process using the coil method. I initially had to restart because I didn't wait for the base to harden enough and so the whole thing sagged.
After some work I realized his head was not proportionate (something I struggle with sometimes) but decided to give it a few more hours worth of sculpting before judging it too much.
The view from the side here shows you that I did not calculate how much clay I had on hand, and how freakishly thin and long Bill's head is, not to mention that I wouldn't be able to attach his famous bowtie at this height.
Added the eyes and mouth and various details. I didn't want to put too many because I knew I would have to drastically change his structure later.
I finally reached a point where his face is long enough that you can almost discern who he is and how gaunt of a face he has.
After getting my hands on more clay I was able to build the base up enough that I could incorporate his bowtie in a way that was proportionate (I hope!).
That's where I'm at, and I'm hoping to add the final touches on him soon. I know from now that I'm probably going to tweak his chin and bowtie, along with his forehead and eyes. If you notice anything else, please don't hesitate to point it out![]()
Thanks,
Face
