E.O.W Round #199: In the Dead of Winter - (Winner: Yatzenty)

E.O.W Round #199: In the Dead of Winter

TOPIC = In the dead of winter

    Brief:

This is an open topic. Think about the atmosphere of your piece and how cold it should look being that it takes place in the most severely freezing part of winter, wherever it is. This is also all up to interpretation too because the phrase "dead of winter" can be many things, not just literal. The 200th EOW activity will be shortly after the due date for this one, so be on the lookout for that! This section has come a long way, indeed.

    Deadline: 20 November

    Skeleton Valley

Thanks again to everyone who commented, the quality of feedback was amazing. Didn't have to much time to play around with incorporating them but I did take mental notes for continuing the piece later. Thanks again!

As for my background on the piece, I took the prompt a bit literally with the skeletons. I wanted a slightly nostalgic feel along with the scary factor (that's why i have the sunrise as opposed to night) as if these are the remnants of some place that once was great. I don't know what's through that gate but I do know that if I were a character in this story-that's the way I would have to go to get there.

'With the little they had, the Monks in the Northern Fringes
hired a small troop of mercenaries to protect then from an unnameable enemy.
"I wondered off towards the outer perimeter on my own, the cold,
its in the dead of winter, who would attack these cloaks?" Constantly
freeing the blade from its leathery sheaf least it sticks, the rest seemed to be happily nested in the
crumbling western tower, drinking, hiding from the cold.
"After all who would invade a place like this?
It Seemed to have happened once before, what sort of religion is this anyways?"
The benevolence of the statues screamed to run in the opposite direction.'

this is mount ararat, eastern turkey. a team of expeditors set off for their search for the ark of noah, get caught in a bitter storm and are lost. a search & rescue team is sent after them, to no avail of course (i'm pushing the borders of cliché :D)

    really awesome round!

here is my final. I tried to find a story for it, so here it goes, some more cliché : Sun: "Father, you always told me that Sintra was a brave warrior, so why didn´t he go into the temple of Moros the God of Winter and Coldness." Father: "Oh son, I guess you´re playing too much knucklebones! First of all, he was alone. Just a fool would go there alone. And when he arrived and saw the smoke at the Tower of Torture he knew he was too late. His brother had died. Murdered by the dead souls of Moros. With the death of his brave brother the battle seemed lost. But he swore revange and was brave enough to return and to win against Moros. Without him we wouldn´t be here my sun."

It's the dead of winter, the land is frost bitten and harsh. However the Crystal City in the heart of the Tundra is the remaining habitable environment for travelers. Protected by a Bubble, the rich and wealthy live
lavish lives within the dome, where as the poor and starving live on the outskirts in cold dilapidated buildings.
The crystals within the surrounding area are rich with a newly discovered mineral, when burned generates a large amount of energy used to sustain the city.

Tried some of the suggestions I got here and otherwhere, but didn't really feel it, so I just kept it bare.
Think it worked out quite well even without spaceships or people.
In a way I think it fits the theme even better this barren...

    Anyway, hope you like it

    In the Dead of Winter

Aurora just started its beautiful display on the December sky but Sir Galahad did not have time to cast his eyes on it, he had to be focused...movement in his armor was very difficult that freezing, whisper quiet night.
The dead was awaiting his victim and there was nothing anyone could do to prevent it. Soon the silence will be broken...

This time artwork produced without use of any 3d, production time 2.5 h Photoshop

Early morning... Another day of journey - but it seems that it soon will be over.

Just a few more steps, despite the very cold winter ...

    I voted for: liquorbleu

Becouse his is the only motive which actually looks cold, while all the others just look wintery!
Others are great too, but this one had the right kind of atmosphere to it.

Great entries. I voted for smuli because I could actually feel the cold and bleakness through the picture. Great atmosphere.
