    RBA Sketchbook

    Name:  irons_sp_ca.gif

    Thanks for stopping by!
    My name is René Benedikt Aigner, I'm an artist based in Munich, Germany. I do commissions occasionally, but my day "job" is studying psychology and English linguistics.
    I've noticed lately that was was stagnating, not moving on or at least moving on too slowly. So I got a bit more instructional stuff (really loving Jeff Watt's DVD on Portrait Drawing) and decided to crank up my ouput considerably. So, here goes. I've a few things I did during the last few days, and apart from that I hope to do at least one presentable sketch/speedpainting/study a day. I feel like I particularily suck at the first stages of a drawing, namely the measurement and construction. I find that I have to rectify mistakes later on which I should have noted beforehand. Digital that's not a big deal, but when working on paper that really gets on my nerves. I think I work too fast and don't concentrate enough during those stages of the procedure.

    A few figures;

    Studies from Singer Sargent:

    Portraits and random stuff:

    I realize this is a huge dump. Thanks for looking at my stuff anyway!

    I think the head in the first figures are a bit too small and the necks too long but man, those other portraits and landscapes are simply stunning! You are unbelieveably good with values and I love the soft colors of the 1st woman
    Truly lovely, keep posting!
    Please take a look at my Sketchbook! <- Comments are highly appreciated and returned C:

    Thanks everyone for the kind words.
    Here's a quick portrait before I go to bed;

    In the animation, if you look closely you'll see that my first estimation of the left eye was way off. It's those inconsistencies that are driving me made when working in charcoal or pencil :/

    No Refs used for these three heads. Still haven't got the abstraction down as well as I should have.

    You have a great way of making marks, and using texture in the skin. Although, I'm wondering, why do you keep your palettes so limited in all of your portraits? The limited palette does look really nice, don't get me wrong, but you seem to be very cautious about color. I'm just wondering if there's a reason. Otherwise, keep it up!

    Thanks!

    lemming-clone-,
    You're right, I tend towards limited palettes. I do like the look of them, but mostly it's because there's so much going on in a portrait that I still have major problems with (mainly the measuring and constructing) that I concentrate on those things and the values more. I'll worry about colour when I get those things nailed.

    Two pages of Loomis studies;

    Your studies and portraits are great, although I feel like they would be stronger if you didn't try to render every single hair follicle.

    Thanks karmazon, you're right, it's hard to know when to stop with something as detailed as the hair. I'll try to be more abstract and focus on the genreal shapes.
