    ROUND #278 - Bull, Ring-tailed Shortsnout

    topic:

    ROUND#277: Bull, Ring-tailed Shortsnout

It's been a while since I prompted COW with a composite of random adjectives and categorizations for creatures, so here's a new one: the bull, ring-tailed shortsnout. When I say bull, I mean to say that it is an adult male which is larger and heavier in build than the equivalent female of the species, other than that it's up for interpretation. Ring-tailed can refer to patterning, armor, bone structure or really any way you can fit rings into the design of the tail. What I will request is that the rings be a feature that is exclusive to the creature's tail. Shortsnout strikes me as a categorization given to a creature that is part of a larger genus (with longer snouts, likely). Think about the genus as a whole, rather than just the creature you're designing, why it might have developed a shorter snout than other, similar species. It's free reign, other than that. I'm not a stickler for predator or grazer, aquatic, land, aerial or spaceborne, that's all on you.

    Round Requirements:

    - The creature must be the male of it's species (the choice to represent the females is up to the artist, but the male should be the focus)

    - The creature should have rings as a design element, unique to the creature's tail, in some way

    - The creature must have a short snout, or be represented as a member of a larger genus of animal with a relatively shorter snout than it's counterparts

    Deadline:

    November 6th, 7:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

    Finals go here: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthr...rtsnout-Finals

    Hello there ladies and gentlemen,

My first post plus first entry.
General idea and silhouette, tomorrow some value and eyes.
A bit snazzy but the gradient plus background gave a nice effect.

Here's my first sketch. I was thinking these guys have an oddly bulky tail to counterbalance their front heavy muscle structure which they use when running into each other at high speeds. You know, to impress the ladies.

So far everyones designs look really good. Here are some ideas of mine. I want to flesh out a few of them and would be interested in hearing what everyone thinks.

heres some thumbnails, I decided to take a different approach to the ringtail element by incorporating a literal ring in the tail, I'm mostly leaning towards a predatory type with a tail that either act like a noose/snare or hypnotises by producing a chime, though I may go for one of the the two passive/ceremonial ones (one with many tails, one that's raptor like). feel free to give any opnions

the tail used to be useful to hang on trees but they got bigger and bigger and now is useless, they have strong legs for fast running and large jumps but they are very heavy what makes these species slow and easy to be catched by predators, they are very smart omnivores, that manipulate the food with their 3 fingered hands

    Howdies!
Quick line and gradient study before fleshing it out. I was thinking of a mountainous/timber environment creature when i saw the description. Tusk's and bony forehead plating are for competitive fighting for mates, but the main purpose for the tusks is to loosen savory mountain mussels from their rocky homes underneath the eaves of stony outcroppings. Rings on the tail will come later, big bushy tail acts as support for scaling mountain faces.

abro, that is a fantastic face, but feel as if that tail isn't the right one for it. the mountain goat as it looks like uses the superb traction on its hooves for climbing.

    That Face!

starting today, lets see if l can finish this

when l hear bull l immediately think of the testosterone driven fights, so l'm trying to illustrate that. rings will be made to look like bone, same with horns just placing shapes down at this stage.

Love the direction some of these are going, alexson and bastion's both look super duper badass.

Here's a few quick sketches, any worth going ahead with? Sorry for the poor quality, this is why I never upload crap from my sketchbook but hopefully you get the idea

My idea was that there are kinds with long sharp snouts, but these guys evolved huge digging claws and long necks to forage for food instead. And that they have boney tail armour that eventually curls up into spiralling hoop shapes, kind of like a rattlesnakes. Now I'v seen everyone elses though I think he's pretty damn goofy. Blue dewlaps are never a good look!

heres my second WIP, I've combined some of the thumbnails together and decided and finalised my idea, basically it's a predator that swings it tail to create a whistling sound as air rushes through the ring, the frequency overwhelms a preys sense of hearing and can disorient them as the Ringtail comes at them. A unique feature of the Bull of the species is the loose rings of bone on the tail ring. When shaken at the right tempo, they create a ringing tone, that will hurt the hearing of normal male Ringtails. This is how the Bull Ringtail, instills his dominance over the pack. However, if another Bull appears and challenges his authority, he will have to fight to remain in charge as other Bulls are immune to the ring of the bone rings.
(I know that this is kind of over the top, but when I get an idea about a concept I can't help but share it)

Please share any ideas and opinions you have to help me improve my image, thanks.

based on the wording Si_Swe, i think the whole genus would have short snouts and this particular species would have the ring-tails

smart-assing aside, im gonna try to put together a sketch for this. too busy to do a full piece though ;_; but its been waaaaaaay too long since ive done CoW!

Not having done a lot of COW, I don't know how you'll take this... but I think there's an issue with balance on your beast. If you do a horizontal flip you'll see that your BRTS is leaning; not only that, but I can't imagine a creature with such a long head/torso not tipping over. Still I stopped to look because your creature is not w/o its charms and amiability.

Yeah right. I figured that its little off balance when I started the sketch. I tried to balance by pushing the creatures front-right leg (which is on the other side, away from the viewer) forward, but I didn't like the pose.
So... I patted myself and said, "Let it be. Move on dude. It's not a big issue"

I am not denying you suggestion. It's just I think it's okay. No hard feeling ah!

Thanks for the comments. Really appreciate.

By the way I couldn't figure out what BRTS is.
