Disney acquires Lucasfilm for 4.05 billion, sets to release Star Wars Episode VII

This is absolutely insane. It was just announced that Disney acquired Lucasfilm in a mix of cash and stock for 4.05 billion, and plans to not only release Episode VII in 2015, but release a Star Wars feature film every two to three years after.

Not only does acquiring Lucasfilm give them access to Star Wars, but Disney now has control of ILM, Skywalker Sound, Lucasarts, and all that sweet, sweet merchandising.

I guess with the acquisition of Pixar and Marvel, they're pretty much set to rename themselves "OMNIENTERTAINMENT".

It's going to be terrible. Probably worst than the abomination of the prequels.
Though I'd laugh if they weren't bad because they have a different director.

It seems like it's him alleviating himself of the company and everything tied to it, since he says in a statement that he always wanted Star Wars to outlive him, and wanted to pass it onto the next generation of film makers. So I guess when this comes around it'll most likely have a new director.

I can't imagine the money they'll be throwing at lobbyists when the copyright issue comes up again.

I mean, there's really no guarantee it'll be bad. It certainly could suck, but there's definately room for three more live action movies in the Star Wars universe. It just depends on if they get a good script and also lets somebody other than George Lucas direct it.

If George sold it, its because he wasn't making enough money with it. Because George is all about the money.

Like the plinkett reviews (which if you haven't seen those watch them. They're amazing) show. George once was a young aspiring director who would spend time in the desert with models just to get the right shot while now he just sits in his chair in front of a green screen unchallenged by any around him.

Honestly not much worse can happen to the series. George shat out a flawed script in 5 minutes and no one wanted to tell him off.

At the end of the day, I don't think I could care less if they keep making Star Wars until I'm dead and worm ridden. I enjoyed that series for what it was, and reject whatever it is I dislike. That's not my distaste at this whole thing.

It's more the idea that that flowchart of who owns what just got a bit more consolidated, and Disney just eked out a bit more of a pie for themselves. I mean, think about how vicious they fought to extend Mickey's copyright, then imagine how they might be once this cash cow rolls around (providing they keep its bloated corpse living for that long.)

I wonder if someday Disney will get to a point where not a single dollar shifts outside of its corporation. If it hasn't already, it'll be circulating money the way we circulate blood.

An online pal of mine makes Star Wars fan flicks as a hobby. He says one of the reasons why he chose Star Wars is because George Lucas has always been very tolerant about it: he knows that he has his fans to thank for his success, and so he doesn't begrudge them their fun.

I guess he'll have to think twice about it now before making such a film...

Funny, this thread is going the exact same direction as the thread when Marvel was bought, I believe that ended with artist like Marko coming in telling people to stop bitching ... O wait thats exactly what happened.... http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?167728-Disney-buying-out-Marvel/page2&highlight=Disney+Buys+Marvel

Its like deja vu... So perhaps stop bitching

That was just a marketing ploy, not something you can attribute to a single writer. There's no way a franchise would do something of that scale just because a writer wanted to make a name for themself.

OK, No Lucas..I'm alright with that.

Give me a Neil Marshall or Quentin Tarantino Star Wars film..

    I'd watch that. Do it.
