    Sketch vs finished work

    Hey guys,

I was wondering whether it's more important to make quick sketches of objects/people etc. or to finish them all.
Which method is better to improve your skill?
I did a course about figure drawing some time ago and I definetly love gesture drawings more than if shading a figure for one hour. But I'm afraid that I forget how to shade them if I only do gesture drawings lol. Same with objects.

So what's your opinion on that?

I did not say that I only want to do one of these things but I asked which one is more important. So on what you should focus on when you just start out.

To both. Really, they compliment each other.

BOTH. That's the point. Neither is "more important", together they cover the full scope of what you should be learning.

Really, this is like learning a language and asking which is more important, grammar or vocabulary.

Knowing how to start a picture is a skill that needs to be practiced and learned.
Knowing how to finish a picture is a skill that needs to be practiced and learned.

    Ok thanks.
Even though this question was a little stupid I often feel very unconfident about the easiest things about art and that's why I ask such stupid questions lol.

No biggie - it's natural to have questions...just don't always expect there to be an answer. In this case the question is simply answered by engaging in the activity...for a few years.

    All drawing is a statement.
A quick drawing is a quick statement.
A complex drawing is a complex statement.

In human speech there is a cry, an anecdote, a tale and a saga. All stem from the same root. to tell a story.
