    Spartan Camp #243 - 50 gestures + Optional "Running/Jumping Study"

    Spartan Camp #243 - 50 gestures + Optional "Running/Jumping Study"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 4th of November.

    - The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

    - In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Running/Jumping", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:

    The Background
When gesture drawing from reference, for instance when using gesture drawing tools, we tend to come cross poses that may be dynamic, but are also stable. These reference images are frequently taken in studios, and taking optimal pictures tend to require relatively fixed positions.

    The Exercise
This week, the optional study will focus a little on the type of poses we tend to see less in our reference images because they require a lot of room, momentum and movement. Examples include jumping, running, diving, falling, sliding, and so forth. Lots of action, moving the entire body as a whole. You can study one or several of these figures, the best way to do this may be by including some of these poses in your usual set of gestures.

    Reference
No specific links for now, feel free to do suggestions. For the sake of this study, sports images and dancers come to mind.

As always- reference advised, not obligatory. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!

    Upcoming Optional Studies
Specialized anatomy study - The name may change. The study will include choosing a single anatomical target (say, an arm), and producing three sketches. One addresses the skeleton, one for the inner anatomy such as musculature, and one is an outer view.

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

Looking good guys! Going to crit when possible.

I went with my 'usual' routine.

First 4 scans are from reference.
Then 2 scans of quick gestures (imagination)
Then 2 scans of longer gestures (imagination)

Those look good Animare, particularly the middle one. If you don't mind my asking, do you know any good sites to find detailed horse photos/videos?

I've added my own longer study to the mix, but I think I'll finish up with mainly short ones. I want to try and get to that 50 mark and then do a lengthy running/jumping study.

Update>> Added another semi long study. Couldn't help myself!

    Update>> Quickie Heads

    Update>> 2 Athletes and a model

    Update>> Weird Color Experiment

    Update>> More Colors!

    Hey Anthis,

That is a mighty collection of gestures. When you go about drawing, do you lightly draw a line of action, or are you mainly thinking in terms of outline and shape? Either way nice job.

anthis: it is quite rare that i find imaginative pose better than those from reference, but in your case i do, and thats a big accomplishement, really strong poses and gesture, im jealous!

spivak: you seem to have a good grasp of values and volumes, but i find you put too much information at time in your drawings and it looses its solidity, a little more precision and chosing where to place your lines carefully could improve your drawings a bunch!

dippesh: i think its clear that you need more practice in order to get better, even though you show promise, just give yourself more time and practice and you will be better in no time, i think your drawings need more precision and fluidity, the proportions are not very accurate at first glance.

animare: wow! the middle one is really great i never spend that much time on studies, not enough patience! im totally impressed!!!

Andartarius, ya I have a tendency to beat up the page with dark lines and unnecessary info. Do you think the bottom middle hurdler of my last post is closer to the mark for being a well balanced gesture?

It has been a very long time since I last posted on this site. Lessons learned and money spent later, and I'm back at it. And its still all about practice....

    Nice tonal images!
Some horse references that I know of:
Venomxbabay stock on deviantart - Just horses.
My dads site. He photographs for fun at a lot of horse shows.
Equinus-International on facebook Not sure if that link will work. Never any good at linking when it comes to Facebook. If it doesn't just type in their name into the search. They post a lot of different kinds of horse sports pictures at a decent quality.
The ones I used though were just from typing 'Olympics' into the Tumblr search. Get a lot of different athletes that way.
