    Daily Self-portrait (on drugs)

An interesting look if you haven't seen this before.

    http://bryanlewissaunders.org/drugs/

Some of the differences in style to me come off as perhaps self-imposed--like he's thinking more about what he took than doing an actual honest self portrait. For example the fluctuation in style between doing marijuana and marijuana resin--feelings-wise, there's really just not THAT much of a discrepancy. But some are pretty interesting nonetheless. Although the guy who did all those portraits on acid seems a lot more sincere.

Reminds me of Louis Wain's cat paintings as he developed schizophrenia.

There's a video on YouTube where an artist is asked to draw his self portrait after a dose of LSD. Weird stuff. Imho it's optimal and healthier to draw while listening to some music - often it can help you open the doors and windows of imagination you would never otherwise realise you have in your cranium.

You do your drugs after a bottle of wine? What are you trying to be Janice Joplin?

I find knocking down a couple Benadryls with a couple shots of vodka is a mighty fine sleepin' tonic.

    Self-portrait precursor? Not so much!

This is nothing new, we already have all of Android's self portraits on here. Badumtish... (I'm just joking, jeez.)

I call major bullshit on the DMT and Salvia ones. I guess for those he said that he drew them mostly after, though. You're not going to do any drawing on salvia, that's for sure.

Louis Wain is massively under-appreciated. He is often seen as twee, and some of the 'cat's doing human stuff' certainly is. But his kaleidoscopic and wallpaper cats and the images he created whilst in Bethlem are amazing. These days he's seen as more likely having aspergers rather than schizophrenia. If you can find it, Rodney Dale's biography of Wain is well worth a read, the recent reprint having more colour plates than the older edition.

It's amazing how much those cats resemble the triptamine dimension. It's absolutely unmistakable. I think that gives credence to the notion of the role of DMT in the brain chemistry of those suffering from mental illness.

I suffer from mental illness (schizophrenia) but it has never helped my art in any way I dont think. Art has been a form of meditation for me. a way to redirect things that are going on in my head. medication helps but it is not a cure and even at maximum dosages i still suffer symptoms. I wish I could say there was some benefit like more creative art but it has mostly made things difficult to focus. I wish i could draw all the time but things have been difficult tbh.
