Hey everyone !

First post here and i'm lookign forward to learning lots and becoming a better artist ( as everyone is )
I've been drawing about 3 months and finding lots to be very alien to me, there is so much in light and color that your eyes take for granted and applying realistic values to a painting appears to be a long road to success

Challenge Accepted!

Anyway i'll be posting my daily sketches here for some crit and advise and hopefully make some new friends along the way

My favourite things to draw are creatures but it appears that creatures are my weak point as light does funny things when reflecting off different types of skin and scale
Here's a few to get me started, drawing from this week.

Alien.... type thing.. LOL I need to fix the proportions on the brow and jaw so it's even on both sides. will post an update soon. Also this was an attempt at slimey skin and have been told to try next time with an opaque hard edges brush.

I like the Carrion Bird piece you did would be cool to see a full body of him
Creatures are something I'm weak at. Maybe some constructive crits would be to maybe study up on some more textures and think why there like that in the first place.
Also maybe some like evolution of creatures would be fun to paint for you

Some good stuff going on here! One thing that stood out the most to me is that in your last two figurative pieces of the Man and woman they both look a little plastic-y. This is because it seems like you are only using values of that one flesh color. For example, I think in particular your alien piece in the first post and the John lennon are good examples of colored shadow (The warm Shadow and cool light on the alien, and the colored blue on John). As a rule of thumb, for human skin I find the most common shadows to see are Greens, Blues, and purples. A good book to pick up (If you're looking for one) is James Gurneys Color and Light book. Definitely do more observational studies, and maybe even see if you can find some good reference with colored light, It's the best way to learn!

As for your latest post the heads on a few are looking a little small for the body, so be careful about that. Another book suggestion in terms of Anatomy would be Andrew Loomis' Figure Drawing for all it's worth book, I can't wait to see what you'll be cranking out in the future! Best of luck!

I have those books and i also have some gnomon workshop DvDs with David Finch, Those few sketches are only only humans i've drawn ever Steep learning curb Thanks for the advice and the comments it's really appreciates

Nice SB! The Carion Bird is cool and your strongest pice. I would suggest you in matters of anatomy and figure drawing to focus first on the shapes and your feeling of 3D Space before you start with complex musculature. Just keep on doing these kind of sketches and studys as you did already and you ll make progress. I suggest you to stay away from more complex position drawings for the beginning. As a first step you should take some time (dont make 2 mins sketches. There more usefull when you have already a general idea of the shape of the body) and deal with the basics of the human form like proportion. You may also start with stick figures at the beginning, then you can add some easy 3 dimensional shapes (a ball for the head a box for the ripcage, and so on). Just search for good images on the internet, take your time and study. One thing I did to understand the human body was that I drew many lines on my own body to mark places like the lowest rips, the collarbones or the form of the pectoral muscle for example. Then I looked at myself in the mirror from diffrent angles. On this way you can see how the position of the marked areas change from diffrent angles, but I suggest you to do that when you get your proportions and basic shapes straight.

Finally got a copy of Andrew Loomis's Figure Drawing - For all it's worth.
Just pracicing proportions, still finding it hard every time i do one.. It's driving me bonkers but i really wana get good at drawing humans.. GRR
