Hor Kit Chung : Self-study digital artist

Hi, I am Chung Hor Kit, 26 years old Chinese guy born in Malaysia. As a self-taught cg artist ever since I graduated from high school @ 2003, I never really get any full review base on my works throughout the years, and I consider my learning process kinda messy.
At first I didn't put my hope very high and I've been learning slowly as a hobbyist. I worked from as truck loader, speaker technician, display artist, graphic designer, 3D architecture illustrator & eventually a 3D animator. But unfortunately, it didn't last long & I decide to give myself some time to try things at home alone.
All these years I took all the chances around me to learn and grow, but somehow I realized why I just couldn't stop thinking about excel in my 2D art, and now I couldn't stop myself from trying to be a concept artist desperately.
I am more desperate to learn then to earn now, but reality hurts too. So I hope I can get a complete review & suggestions on technical & mental. Please enlighten me, thank you...

Hi m8! There's some promising stuff featured here, but if you are serious about getting job in the field, particulary in concept art you probably should ask yourself, what is concept art.. When I scrolled through the pieces above, I had a problem understanding what are you good at. It often happpens when I see the works of guys who are not quit sure about what they wanna do exactly and are they ready for a serious job. I'm 26 year old Russian guy, who graduated first from regular school and then from Nuclear Engeneering University lol... I'm a self-taught artist and only now I finally could afford studying in AAU San Francisco (online atm). I'm freelancing as a concept artist and illustrator for about a year now and this totally changed my view on my art and the way I pursued my passion. First thing I realized is a very simple yet somehow confusing thing - you will only get the job that you ask for or the one that you agree to do... It is simple, but when a young artist is just about to start getting money for some kind of art he or she does - he or she tend to take whatever job there is, and this is ok. But after that many of them (including myself some time ago) tend to put these first commission works in their portfolio at once. If it was not your dream job or some particular area that you like to keep working in - then you probably shouldn't feature them in your portfolio. Because now your portfolio looks too scattered in a way, there are some pieces in the beginning that feature some actuall concepts that were used probably? Or these are commission pieces? If they are - you should ask yourself if it is what you really wanna do? Are you very very much pleased with the result? If not - they probably should go to the end of your portfolio and be labeled as "Work experience".. After these there are some illustrations, ask yourself if you wanna do illustration or concept art? Personally I always wanted to be a concept artist, but I was offered doing illustrations fricking ALOT so now I'm not afraid of adding a lot of illustration pieces into my portfolio, if you like illustration and would like to get that kind of job - do it!) Then there are a couple of unreasonably huge portraits - remember you don't wanna showcase the fact that you CAN paint/draw - ppl who are about to hire you are interested first and foremost in your ability to SOLVE PROBLEMS visually, if you don't have any artistic skills they won't hire you at all - so when you show you work, be confident, don't show some stuff just to prove that you have basic skills - show everybody how amazing you vision is, and yes you HAVE that amazing vision, otherwise you wouldn't torture yourself with this difficult and painstaking career path! (the second portrait kinda features vampire because there's blood on her lips and bla bla, cmon be honest with yourself (which is immensely important) you're just happy with the fact she's kind'a pretty, and that's it - there should be something more about the character to explore! Go for it!) And at the very bottom we have two concept things (which is strange since you said that you wanna do concept art) - with concept art, you probably want to make a concept sheet showing more of character's features, dig the stuff deep, try to develope character's history, reason the things you show at least for yourself. Remember that you're not just creating something to look cool, there should always be some reason behind the concept since it's a design (and designing is problem solving process), try to convey it in the sheet... I hope this is a good example demonstrating the things I wanna say - http:///images/view/101730/... Good luck mate, stay stiff and keep on working working and working, feature you stuff in internet, participate in challanges and events, keep a sharp eye on the works of artists you adore - watch their techniques (watch Feng Zhu videos, Gnomon, Massive Black, CtrlPaint) and don't ever stop, eventually you will be a pro, it's a fight that you can't lose if you just keep fighting - this simple truth always cheers me up ^^

Hey Chung I like your work and I can see your focus in being a well rounded concept artist. I would suggest you to do some life study and more specific study the subjects you wish to paint or draw, example doing a creatures - bugs, sea life, critters, ect. Doing this you will learn a lot more about what it is your drawing/painting and this will result in making your work to look more believable. I can definitely see you are very passionate and have a lot of energy when you draw but be patient with yourself and you will see results. I hope this helps and good luck Chung!
