    Yule Madonna

Here is my Winter Spirit character. I am calling her the Yule Madonna. She is the theoretical pagan goddess whom the Madonna was modeled after when Christianity assimilated the holidays; kind of a simile for all the pagan traditions that live on in modern-day Christmas. I was very torn on whether or not to change her color to blue, but I think with the holiday references red is contextually appropriate.

The spirit of Winter, it was called by the indiginous peoples of the North.
It was a spirit all right. Incorporeal, dresses in rags, somewhat reminiscent of death.
It brought cold with it. Unimaginable cold.

The only thing that could stop it was another of its kind.

@yongs: I love your piece, excellent mood! I liked the wip better anyway, the raindeer/caribou had a more creepy and eerie feeling to it. Must be the skull's shape.

    Anyway, nice job everyone!

I think alexson, DPFX and yongs had three of the strongest images in my opinion. My vote went to DPFX because his character sparked my imagination more than any other picture. All in all it was great to see the different interpretations. If anyone has any crits for my entry I encourage you to not hold back.

Hey alexLH, I can see what you're trying to portray in that piece. I think there's really potential for it to be awesome. But do correct me if i'm wrong regarding the idea of the dude you did.

I think you can push further the "old and fraile" aspect of him. Maybe make him skinnier or a change or posture. But if he's suppose to be old but strong, then i would say bring that further as well. The other crits i have would be some fundmental issues, some slight proportions and kinda muddy on the abdominal area. Use tons of references! They really help!

Sorry for that. Just wanted to provide some crits since you asked haha. I rmb times when i asked but no gave me any would'nt want that to cycle.

Btw i picked alexson and PixelTUNER. IMO alexson captured the winter kinda well, how could i forget the falling snow! PixelTuner just has a really confusing name and I like how his piece is nicely rendered.

    Here somewhat heavy criticism...be warned.

Setting aside the technical and skills aspects, in my opinion the mayority of the entries are not true to the brief, even while it is very open and with just a few rules to follow.
Mostly, i don't understand why, if the very concept of the character is an "spirit"...the mayority of entries depicts a very corporeal and solid, grounded to the earth man or woman.
In this regard just a few seem to depict what could be easily be interpreted as a spirit. Yes you could always explain with words why is a spirit, but the concept have to give enough
clues so there are no doubt about it.

Among those few, i liked the Yongs and Dforman concepts, so they had my vote.

@Pixel: i'd like to see that you push yourself a little more in the design department, since you are almost always giving everything the exact same face and body proportions, changing the cloth and the stuff the character holds. If you have a solid reason to do that, no problem. The only reason i can think of is the convenience of not having to think and develop ideas for the most crucial aspect of the character (the face). I dont know what kind of good are you doing yourself, since you are not growing and experimenting in that aspect. Think of all the possibilities to explore your own creativeness you are letting pass every time that you repeat yourself. Sorry if this is not sounding pleasant, and let my know if i'm wrong or missing something.

    Cheers.
