A Fresh Start - Back to the Basics

I decided to start a new sketchbook thread for the new year. I try to emphasize more of the basics (anatomy and color etc) in this sketchbook. I hope to constantly update this, but I have my military commitments so do bear with me.

First up, several studies from the book "Drawing Dynamic Hands" by Burne Hogarth.

Pretty great start for your sketchbook sir! The hands are great and so are most of the other studies. Just be careful in that male body, the shoulders look a bit wide and the pose itself looks kinda stiff.

    Good work, keep it up!

    Merry christmas!!

Merged the last picture from the last post to the first picture of this post as they are from the same page of my sketchbook.

Been a long time since my last update... been kinda busy with the current project and other non-art related issues.

Based on the concept art that was posted earlier.

When trying to put together a portfolio for school application, I realized that I did not have any real presentable 3D low polygon models. While I do not want to give up on 2D, I do find my 3D skills to be sub-par.

Thus, I set aside a project for this year, and that is: to come out with a series of low polygon character models that are of a certain quality. With this being the 1st of the series, I hope to familiarize myself once again with the 3DS Max interface and the whole pipeline of creating a character model.

This character is actually a redesign of an old character I conceptialized for a game project that didn't happen. I wanted it to be kinda like a typical "main character" type of pirate.

    More to come soon...

That's some great progress! you got some solid foundations to build on already, and some very good variety. the cloth (3rd page in #6) in particular caught my eye, brilliantly done!

For improvement, I noticed that your construction lines are usually straight, you use very little to describe the volume of objects... from what I can see anyway. Not that it seems to affect your drawings much, you do great depth and foreshortening. Just something I noticed going through your sketchbook

looking really good! likin the digital stuff, but on that last character there might be some proportion issues. His hands (especially his left hand) are too big - compare the size of his left hand to his head.
He also has the torso of a slim-built man but the ams of a weightlifter.
    Keep up the good work!

I've decided to dust off this thread with hopes of improving my skills before graduation (which takes place before May this year)
The following is my new site with my most updated works:
    www.jason-w.com

I want to concentrate on concept art and illustration, but have been told time and time again that it is an extremely difficult field to get into.
Well, I hope to be ready for the industry by constantly updating this thread!

First up, a character design piece. Will paint it in days to come.
